Thanks to their revitalising, anti-ageing properties, Vitamin C and Retinol have long been hailed wonder skincare ingredients by beauty experts and enthusiasts across the globe.
Retinol, a dermatologist-approved derivative of Vitamin A, boasts an abundance of benefits to the skin including supporting natural collagen, visibly minimising dark spots, improving cell turnover … the list goes on.
Meanwhile Vitamin C is renowned for tackling uneven skin tone, acne scars and age-betraying fine lines while brightening your complexion.
But while the two powerhouse ingredients are often presented individually as the headline act of a serum or moisturiser, it is less common to find a product where they are offered together in a powerful formula.
Award-winning, science-led skincare brand StriVectin, which hails from the US, offers a new innovative, supercharged serum where Vitamin C and Retinol come together with NIA-114, the brand’s patented form of Niacin.
Its Super-C Retinol Brighten & Correct Vitamin C Serum has already gained something of a cult following among skincare aficionados across the pond – and looking at the impressive results it’s easy to see why.

Meanwhile a string of five star reviews for the innovative product claim it leaves skin ‘brighter’, ‘smoother’ and ‘less patchy’.
For anyone who’s recently returned to the office and is struggling with those early morning alarms after commute-free months of working from home during lockdown, the Super-C Serum is a real tonic for dull, tired-looking skin.
SUPER-C SERUM CLINICALLY PROVEN BENEFITS
The effectiveness of StriVectin is also clinically proven in an independent study.
Over a six week period, 100 per cent* of those who trialled the Super-C Serum demonstrated an improvement in skin firmness, while 97 per cent** showed an improvement in skin brightness.
And after 12 weeks of use, 100 per cent*** showed no irritation to skin.
Designed to be used both in the morning and at night, it promises to restore radiance and clarity while also smoothing fine lines, uneven texture and visibly improving elasticity – the key to a youthful complexion.
And let’s face it, who doesn’t want younger-looking skin?
It’s flying off the shelves in the US – and the good news for Brits is, Super-C Serum is now available to buy from the brand’s UK website.
Unlike a lot of Vitamin C serums on the market, which tend to leave a sticky, tacky residue behind which is a nightmare for applying make-up, the Super-C Serum’s ultra-lightweight formula soaks into skin in a flash, making it ideal for layering under moisturiser.
The fact you don’t have to wait around for ages for it to dry means it can slot conveniently and efficiently into your morning and evening routine.
For those who know a bit about Retinol, here’s the sciencey-bit.
Super-C Serum contains Retinol which is boosted by NIA-114™, the brand’s patented form of Niacin, which is at the core of every StriVectin formula.
This game-changing molecule – which is backed by 35 years of research, 30 independent clinical studies, 90 global patents and 150 published papers – is clinically proven to strengthen the skin barrier and supercharge the performance of its fellow ingredients.
It also contains two potent forms of stabilised Vitamin C – sodium ascorbyl phosphate and ascorbyl glucoside. And naturally the pair work hand-in-hand, resulting in visibly glowing skin.

STILL WORRIED ABOUT USING RETINOL AND VITAMIN C TOGETHER? HERE’S WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY…
Dr Ophelia Veraitch, a consultant dermatologist at Cranley Clinic, told FEMAIL: ‘It used to be considered that Vitamin C and Retinol can’t be used together. This is because Vitamin C requires a lower pH (0-3) and Retinol a higher pH (5.5-6) to be absorbed by the skin.
‘The theory was that using these products together would leave them both ineffective. This is now considered a somewhat outdated view.
WHAT AGE SHOULD YOU START USING RETINOLS?
Dr Ophelia said: ‘For most people it’s a good idea to start using a Retinol in your night time skincare regime from your teenage years, when the skin can become oily and congested due to increased oil production.
‘Retinol helps reduce the oil production and helps de-congest skin that is prone to break outs or acne.
‘From your twenties people can develop signs of ageing such as hyperpigmentation, loss of volume and wrinkles. It’s a good idea to continue using a Retinol because it has strong rejuvenating and anti-ageing properties.
‘For most people Retinol can be incorporated into your evening routine along with a broad-spectrum SPF in the morning.
‘It’s important to use a low strength Retinol and then build up frequency of use and strength. For example, depending on skin type, I tend to start patients on the lower strength Retinols and ask them to use it just 1-2 times a week, and build up the use to every night as the skin gets used to it.
‘If you start using the highest strength Retinols every night then it’s likely you will get peeling and redness, that often stops people from using this effective product again. Even sensitive skin can be trained to acclimatise to Retinol.’
‘Studies have shown that combination products of Vitamin C and Retinol are highly effective. This is thought to be because Vitamin C stabilises Retinol, and therefore in combination they are more effective.’
Dr Ophelia hailed Vitamin C as a powerful antioxidant and ‘one of the few skincare ingredients that has been proven to help in the battle against skin ageing’.
‘It neutralises free radicals – which can cause damage to skin’s outer barrier’ she explained.
‘It also helps protect skin against damage from the environment. Nowadays we are fortunate because it comes in lots of different sorts of skincare.
‘Vitamin C fights free radicals, a process that helps protect Retinol from oxidation as it penetrates deeper into the skin, thereby increasing its anti-ageing benefits.’
Furthermore, Dr Hiba Injibar, founder of Harley Street’s Dermasurge Clinic, said Vitamin C actually helps Retinol work better.
‘The idea that you can’t use Vitamin C and Retinol together [in one product] is a myth based upon the unsupported fact that Retinol is deactivated when combined with acidic ingredients,’ Dr Hiba explained.
‘Vitamin C actually helps Retinol work better! As it combats free radicals, the Retinol is actually protected from oxidisation as it delves further into the skin – penetrating deeper to boost its anti-ageing properties.’
Celebrity facialist Ada Ooi also told FEMAIL the two ingredients work as a team – with the additional use of sun protection factor.
‘There has been suggestions that the acidic PH in Vitamin C absorption can degrade Retinol, however, new studies have shown that there is no correlation for degradation between the two,’ she explained.
‘If you think about it, our skin is naturally prone to acidic, and Retinol does occur within our skin. Therefore in principle both of them play nice together – with the use of sun protection.’
Dr Ophelia added: ‘Always use SPF when you’re using Retinol because of the fact that it makes skin more sensitive to sun damage.’
