Summit Health has selected Jeffrey Alter as its new CEO, the company announced Thursday.

Alter will take the reins at the Secaucus, New Jersey-based provider on Oct. 4. Alter will succeed Dr. Jeffrey Le Benger, who has has been CEO of Summit Medical Group since 1999 and became the CEO of Summit Health following its 2019 merger with CityMD. Le Benger will become executive chairman of the board once Alter becomes CEO.

“I’m honored to work alongside this exceptional team to deliver our mission to provide a more compassionate, responsive and connected kind of care,” Alter said in a news release. “I look forward to building on Summit Health’s established reputation for higher-quality, lower-cost care as we transform healthcare for our patients.”

The combined organization—formed by Summit Medical Group, a multispecialty physician group, and CityMD, an urgent care provider—employs 8,000 people, including more than 2,000 providers, at 200 locations in New Jersey, New York, and Oregon. The company offers primary, specialty and urgent care.

Most recently, Alter served as Anthem Health Solutions’ executive vice president and president of IngenioRx, Anthem’s pharmacy arm. Prior to this he was also the founder and president of Arcturus One Consulting and the CEO of UnitedHealth Group’s commercial business during a 15-year tenure with the insurer.

Alter has been on CityMD’s board since 2017 and is currently a board member at Summit Health, Anomaly, St. John’s University, Progenity and the Long Island Association.
