Don Antonucci
Former Blue Shield of California health leader Don Antonucci will become Providence Health Plans new CEO starting in September, the company announced Monday.
Michael White, the current interim CEO of the Portland, Oregon-based insurer, will transition into a new role as president. White will report to Antonucci. White filled in as chief executive after Mike Cotton departed the company last August to become president and CEO of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare’s SelectHealth, a position he relinquished just two months later.
“I share Providence’s belief that healthcare is a fundamental human right and we have a responsibility to address the health inequalities that continue to impact our country,” Antonucci said in a news release.
Antonucci will be a steward of growth and transformation, Rhonda Medows, president of population health management at Providence, wrote in an email.
“He is a strong promoter for mental health improvement and an excellent leader who stresses the importance of health and wellbeing,” Medows wrote.
Before joining Providence Health Plan, Antonucci was the senior vice president of growth at Oakland-based Blue Shield of California, where he managed its relationships with government agencies and oversaw expansions across its consumer and commercial lines of business.
Antonucci has more than 25 year experience in healthcare and insurance, including his tenure as chief business officer of 10xHealth, a technology solutions company headquarterd in Newport Beach, California.
Outgoing interim CEO White has been with Providence for nearly three decades, during which he’s served as chief financial officer and as manager of the company’s Pacific Northweset operations.
“We understand it is more critical than ever to provide members with affordable, high-quality, value-based care, while remaining steadfast in our commitment to improving the health, education, and opportunities for all of those who we serve,” White said in a news release.
