Selena Gomez’s New Song Is Not About The Weeknd

Sometimes the weekend is just a weekend, not The Weeknd, you know?

In the latest evidence that we better be keeping an eye out for Selener, Selena Gomez herself took to Instagram to clear up speculation about whether ex-boyfriend The Weeknd, whose legal name is Abel Tesfaye, is the subject of her new single, “Single Soon.”

In short: Nah.

On Monday, Hollywood Life posted a snapshot of Gomez and The Weeknd, who dated for about 10 months in 2017, with the assertion that “her fans believe that it is about her romance with #TheWeeknd,” Gomez herself chimed in in the comments.

Not a lot of room for ambiguity there.

The question stemmed from lyrics of the song, in which the narrator takes stock of her closet and tries on her party tops because she will be, as the song is titled, “Single Soon.” Translation: She’s taking Juicy Couture’s advice and dumping him. In the lyrics, she considers leaving a note and/or straight-up ghosting.

Specifically, the lines that raised eyebrows about The Weeknd were, “Maybe I’ll just disappear / I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here.” See? The Weeknd, a weekend—start your yarn walls now.

In an earlier Instagram post, Gomez described the song in a caption as “a playful anthem about being comfortable in your own skin and loving your own company… and it’s also really fun to dance to!”
