Despite Being World-Class, THIS Girl Group Has Never Won Daesang— K-Netz React

THIS K-pop artist is considered the “biggest girl group in the world,” but K-Netz and fans wonder about their lack of a daesang trophy.

Is it because of BTS and TWICE?

Since 2016, BLACKPINK (Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rosé) has been reigning in the global music industry. Upon their debut, the quartet has been creating history with their “firsts” and “highest” records among artists, and they immediately rose as music, fashion, and pop culture icons.

BLACKPINK’s popularity is not only evident in South Korea, as their influence and fame also spread globally, especially in the US market, the largest music consumers in the world.

In fact, they established their position among mainstream artists and entered the US Billboard, were nominated and won in VMAs, and even performed at the GRAMMY.

Regardless of their world-class status, K-netz opened up the topic of why, up to now, BLACKPINK hasn’t earned a daesang, the grand prize in South Korean music awards ceremonies.

In a popular web forum, OP pointed out:

“BLACKPINK has never won a daesang.”

To clarify, BLACKPINK has once won a daesang from the 2022 Seoul Success Awards. However, as it is not a trophy from one of the six most prestigious Korean music awards (MAMA, AAA, GDA, KMA, MMA, and SMA), K-pop fans are skeptical if this is counted.

Upon posting, the article drew high attention from K-netizens and fans, and a lot expressed how they were also unaware of it, given the fame and power the group has.

The writer added:

“I just looked at their award records, and there is no daesang.”

Just then, people started speculating the possible reasons the quartet hasn’t received one yet, and someone claimed that it was because they were “too busy” to attend awards ceremonies that require attendance to accept the award.

“I know there was a time when they were robbed and didn’t get a female group award even when their annual performance was better after not showing up (in the awards ceremony) but BLACKPINK wouldn’t have much thought?”

Another one also accused music awards ceremonies of giving the award to anyone they like, regardless of their success, objectively.

Amid these, some fans cited that BLACKPINK’s failure to take home daesang was due to BTS and TWICE’s performances in the past years, music-wise.

(Photo : Cosmopolitan, Nate, Facebook) TWICE, BTS, BLACKPINK “Have you ever overwhelmingly topped a music album? They didn’t get it because there’s someone with better grades than them.” “It’s because there was a team with better scores than at the time, right?” “It’s a shame that they are in the same time as BTS. But if they participated, the shows would have split the grand prize and they would have given them at least one.” “Because TWICE and BTS are so overwhelming.” “No, but is there a score that made them deserving to win the grand prize? It’s stupid to say that they didn’t get the grand prize because they didn’t go to the awards.”

BLACKPINK’s recent activities

BLACKPINK, a four-member girl group under YG Entertainment, made their debut in the South Korean music industry in 2016. Their recent albums, BORN PINK and THE ALBUM, have collectively amassed over 2 billion Spotify streams worldwide, marking a remarkable milestone. BLACKPINK holds the distinction of being the only girl group in history to achieve this feat.

Both BORN PINK and THE ALBUM set records as the fastest albums ever released by a girl group to reach this incredible milestone. Furthermore, THE ALBUM became the first album by a K-pop girl group to accumulate 2 billion listens on Spotify, achieving this within just 17 months of its release. This accomplishment surpasses the streaming figures of UK girl band Little Mix’s Glory Days and American group Fifth Harmony’s 7/27.

Following the release of the BORN PINK album, the group embarked on their Born Pink World Tour, which kicked off in Seoul in October 2022. This world tour has been nothing short of record-breaking for the group, with sold-out venues and becoming the highest-grossing concert tour of all time by a female group, a title previously held by the Spice Girls. They are set to conclude this remarkable tour with two final encore concerts in Seoul in September 2023.

In addition to their tour success, BLACKPINK also treated fans to a new single titled THE GIRLS, which is part of the soundtrack for their mobile game, BLACKPINK: THE GAME.
