It was rumored that the character would be introduced in the upcoming film Thunderbolts, with actor Steven Yeun cast in the role. However, Yeun dropped out of the project, sparking the fan demand to see Cavill in the role.
A fan took to X to express their desire and wanted to see Kevin Feige announce Cavill as the new Sentry at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con.
Insider MyTimeToShineHello (MTTSH), who is known for sharing reliable reports regarding the MCU’s future squashed these hopes with their reply.
According to MTTSH, Thunderbolts is expected to start filming in March 2024. As a result, Feige announcing Cavill’s casting at SDCC in July 2024 would be impossible. While MTTSH did not directly rule out Cavill joining the project, the insider shared a follow-up tweet implying they are aware of who the new actor to play Sentry will be. As a result, MTTSH’s tweet implied that the role has already been recast and the actor playing Sentry is someone other than Cavill.
Steven Yeun Announced His Exit From Thunderbolts Earlier This Week

In February 2023, it was announced that Steven Yeun would star in Thunderbolts. At the time, Yeun’s role was not disclosed, but it was later confirmed to be that of Robert Reynolds / Sentry. Although the film was announced in 2022, it underwent rewrites, delaying production. Furthermore, production was also affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, forcing Yeun to drop out of the project.
In January 2023, Yeun formally announced that he would be exiting the project, citing scheduling conflicts as the reason for dropping out. Marvel is yet to formally announce a replacement for Yeun in the movie, which is expected to begin filming in March or April 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jake Schreier, who worked with Yeun on the Netflix series Beef, will be taking the director’s chair for Thunderbolts. Eric Pearson wrote the screenplay with Lee Sung Jin doing rewrites. Thunderbolts is scheduled to be released on July 25, 2025.
