IU and Byun Woo Seok to star in royal romance set in a modern constitutional monarchy

IU and Byun Woo Seok will bring a fresh romantic pairing to the small screen in MBC’s upcoming drama '21st Century Crown Prince’s Wife' (working title), set in a fictional constitutional monarchy in modern-day South Korea.

On November 2nd, Kakao Entertainment confirmed the casting of IU and Byun Woo Seok in the new series. '21st Century Crown Prince’s Wife' tells the story of a wealthy woman, frustrated by her "commoner" status despite having everything else, and a crown prince who, as a royal, can possess nothing of his own. The drama, a winning script from MBC's drama competition, will be co-produced by MBC and Kakao Entertainment.

IU will play Seong Hee Joo, the second daughter of the nation’s top conglomerate family. Blessed with beauty, intelligence, and an unrelenting competitive spirit, she struggles when her "commoner" status becomes a stumbling block in her life, ultimately leading her to cross paths with Crown Prince Lee An. Known for her impressive acting in 'My Mister,' 'Hotel Del Luna,' and 'Broker,' IU’s portrayal of the dynamic and complex Hee Joo is highly anticipated.

Byun Woo Seok will take on the role of Lee An, the second son of the king in this 21st-century monarchy. Born into royalty but unable to truly own anything, Lee An has always hidden his true self. However, his life begins to change when he meets Hee Joo. Having previously charmed global fans with his youthful romance in '20th Century Girl,' Byun Woo Seok’s transformation into a modern-day prince has piqued curiosity and excitement.

The chemistry between IU and Byun Woo Seok is already drawing significant attention, with fans eagerly awaiting their fresh and enchanting romance.

'21st Century Crown Prince’s Wife' (working title) is set to premiere in the second half of 2025.
