3-Year-Old Di.es After Swallowing a Coin While Playing: Doctors Urge Parents to Stay Alert to Choking Hazards

Persistent itching may be more than an allergy—it could signal hidden infections.
A 37-year-old woman who had suffered from persistent itching for years was shocked to learn that her symptoms were not caused by allergies alone. After undergoing specialized medical testing, doctors discovered that she had been infected with five different types of parasites simultaneously—an extremely rare medical case that highlights the importance of investigating unexplained symptoms.
The patient sought treatment after experiencing repeated episodes of widespread itching accompanied by hives. Although antihistamines temporarily relieved her symptoms, the itching repeatedly returned, causing significant discomfort. Because the symptoms often subsided after taking medication, she delayed seeking comprehensive medical evaluation for a long time.
Doctors at Hai Duong Tropical Diseases Hospital later conducted extensive examinations after noticing abnormal liver findings during a previous ultrasound. Further laboratory testing revealed an unexpected diagnosis: the woman was infected with five different parasites, including threadworms, dog and cat roundworms, giant liver flukes, dog tapeworms, and blood flukes.
Medical experts described the case as exceptionally uncommon. While infections caused by a single parasite are relatively common in some regions, detecting five different parasitic infections in one patient at the same time is extremely rare. The case demonstrates how long-term exposure to contaminated food, water, soil, or infected animals may increase the risk of multiple parasitic infections if preventive measures are neglected.
Among the parasites identified, the giant liver fluke raised the greatest concern because prolonged infection can seriously damage the liver. If left untreated, liver flukes may silently cause inflammation, fibrosis, bile duct damage, and other complications that become increasingly difficult to manage over time.
According to the treating physicians, persistent itching should never be dismissed when it occurs repeatedly without an obvious cause. Although skin allergies, eczema, and dermatitis are common explanations, chronic itching may also be associated with liver disorders, parasitic infections, metabolic diseases, or other underlying medical conditions that require specialized evaluation.
The patient had previously been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, but the diagnosis did not fully explain her recurring symptoms. Only after advanced imaging studies, blood tests, and parasitological examinations did doctors identify the true cause and begin appropriate treatment.
Health experts advise people to seek medical attention if they experience persistent itching accompanied by symptoms such as recurrent hives, digestive discomfort, abdominal pain, unexplained fatigue, abnormal liver test results, or repeated skin irritation that does not improve with routine treatment. Early diagnosis can prevent serious complications and improve treatment outcomes.
Doctors also emphasize several preventive measures to reduce the risk of parasitic infections:
This unusual case serves as a reminder that seemingly common symptoms can sometimes hide uncommon medical conditions. Persistent or recurring itching should not be ignored, particularly when it lasts for weeks or months without a clear explanation. Timely medical assessment can help identify the underlying cause and prevent long-term complications.
