6. Changes in Skin Texture and Appearance
The skin often reflects what is happening internally.
People with low thyroid hormone levels may develop dry, rough, or flaky skin. Moisturizers may provide only temporary relief because the root cause lies deeper than simple dehydration.
In some cases, the skin becomes pale or appears less vibrant than usual. Healing may take longer, and the skin may feel unusually sensitive.
Individuals with an overactive thyroid sometimes experience warm, moist skin due to increased sweating and elevated metabolism.
Although skin changes are common and can result from many factors, persistent alterations in skin quality should not be ignored when accompanied by other thyroid-related symptoms.
7. Unusual Changes in Heart Rate
The thyroid and cardiovascular system work closely together.
Too much thyroid hormone may cause the heart to beat faster than normal. Some people experience palpitations, a sensation that the heart is racing, pounding, or skipping beats. Even while resting, they may feel unusually aware of their heartbeat.
Too little thyroid hormone can have the opposite effect, contributing to a slower-than-normal heart rate.
These changes may be subtle at first. Individuals often notice symptoms during exercise, periods of stress, or while trying to fall asleep. Because heart-related symptoms can sometimes indicate serious conditions, medical evaluation is important whenever unusual heart rhythms occur.
8. Digestive Changes
Digestive health can also be influenced by thyroid function.
An underactive thyroid often slows bodily processes, including digestion. This may result in constipation, bloating, or a feeling that digestion has become sluggish.
