Pancreatic Cancer: Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to detect early because its symptoms can be subtle, nonspecific, and easy to mistake for ordinary digestive problems.

The pancreas is a small organ located deep in the abdomen, behind the stomach. It plays an important role in digestion and blood-sugar regulation by producing digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin.

The dramatic image above highlights several possible warning signs. However, none of these symptoms automatically means a person has pancreatic cancer. Many are caused by much more common conditions.

What matters is recognizing symptoms that are persistent, unexplained, worsening, or occurring together and discussing them with a healthcare professional.

1. Persistent Abdominal or Upper-Belly Pain

Pain in the upper abdomen can have many causes, including indigestion, ulcers, gallstones, pancreatitis, and other digestive conditions.

However, pancreatic cancer can sometimes cause a persistent pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen.

The pain may occasionally extend toward the back. Some people describe it as a deep, dull ache rather than sharp pain.

In certain cases, discomfort may become worse after eating or when lying down and may improve somewhat when leaning forward.

The important point is not to assume that ordinary stomach pain means cancer.

Instead, persistent or unexplained abdominal pain deserves evaluation, particularly when it is accompanied by other changes such as weight loss, jaundice, or digestive problems.

2. Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without intentionally changing your diet or exercise routine can have many possible causes.

Stress, thyroid disorders, digestive diseases, infections, medication effects, and other medical conditions can all contribute to unintended weight loss.

Cancer is another possibility.

With pancreatic cancer, weight loss may occur because the disease affects appetite, metabolism, digestion, or the pancreas's ability to produce sufficient digestive enzymes.

A person may notice that clothes are becoming looser even though they haven't deliberately tried to lose weight.

Unexplained and continuing weight loss should not simply be attributed to getting older or having a busy schedule.

It is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

3. Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes

One of the more recognizable potential warning signs is jaundice, which causes the skin and whites of the eyes to appear yellow.

Jaundice can occur when bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when red blood cells are broken down, builds up in the bloodstream.

Pancreatic tumors, particularly those located near the head of the pancreas, can sometimes obstruct the bile duct and interfere with the normal flow of bile.

Jaundice may also cause:

  • Dark urine
  • Pale or clay-colored stools
  • Itchy skin

Importantly, pancreatic cancer is not the only cause of jaundice.

Gallstones, hepatitis, liver disease, bile-duct problems, and other conditions can also produce it.

Nevertheless, new unexplained jaundice should be evaluated promptly.

4. Changes in Digestion or Bowel Movements

The pancreas produces enzymes that help the body digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

If pancreatic function is significantly impaired, digestion can change.
