Verifying a sensational post does not require advanced investigative skills.

Start with the headline.

Search the most important factual elements using several different combinations of keywords. If a major event involving a highly recognizable public figure genuinely occurred, reputable media organizations would often provide additional reporting.

Next, look at the source.

A legitimate publication should identify itself clearly and provide information about the article, author, publication date, and editorial organization.

Be cautious when a page uses a generic name, copies the appearance of a news organization, or repeatedly publishes dramatic headlines without providing meaningful evidence.

The date is also critical.

A post may say “20 minutes ago,” but that does not necessarily mean the underlying photograph or information is 20 minutes old.

Look for the original publication timestamp.

Then examine the language.

Words such as “shocking,” “you won't believe,” “finally revealed,” “confirmed just minutes ago,” and “what happened next” are commonly used to encourage clicks.

They are not inherently proof that a story is false, but they should encourage readers to verify the information.

Another useful step is to look for primary sources.

If the claim concerns an official announcement, search for the actual statement rather than relying on someone else's description of it.

If the story concerns a public appearance, look for credible reports from established outlets.

And if the information cannot be independently confirmed, the responsible conclusion is simple:

It remains unverified.

There is nothing wrong with waiting for reliable information.

In fact, refusing to share an unverified claim is often the most responsible thing a reader can do.
