Doctors warn that improperly cleaned raw vegetables may carry dangerous parasites.
A 20-year-old man was diagnosed with three different parasitic infections at the same time, highlighting the importance of food hygiene and proper deworming practices. Doctors say the case serves as a reminder that even vegetables considered healthy can become a source of infection if they are contaminated and not cleaned thoroughly before consumption.
The patient was admitted to the hospital after experiencing persistent pain in the upper right side of his abdomen. According to his medical history, he was generally healthy and occasionally ate raw vegetables. He did not regularly consume raw fish, but he also did not have a routine deworming schedule, which doctors considered a possible contributing factor.
During the examination, physicians performed an abdominal ultrasound and discovered multiple liver abscesses, with the largest measuring approximately 30 millimeters. Blood tests also revealed an elevated white blood cell count, particularly eosinophils, which often increase in certain parasitic infections. These findings prompted doctors to conduct additional serological tests.
The laboratory results confirmed that the patient was infected with three different parasites simultaneously:
Doctors diagnosed the patient with liver abscesses caused by parasitic infection and immediately began appropriate treatment according to medical guidelines. After approximately two weeks of therapy, his condition stabilized and his symptoms gradually disappeared.
Physicians also described another patient who experienced similar symptoms, including persistent pain in the upper abdomen. This individual reported frequently eating raw vegetables. Medical imaging revealed multiple liver abscesses, while laboratory testing confirmed infection with large liver flukes and dog roundworms.
After receiving targeted treatment, the patient's condition improved significantly, reinforcing the importance of early diagnosis and prompt medical care.
Experts explain that raw vegetables themselves do not naturally contain parasites. The real danger comes when produce is contaminated by:
If vegetables are not washed thoroughly, these microscopic organisms may remain on the surface and enter the body when consumed.
Medical specialists recommend several simple but effective precautions:
Symptoms such as persistent upper abdominal pain, unexplained fever, fatigue, or digestive discomfort should not be ignored—especially if they continue for several days or worsen over time. Early medical evaluation can help identify infections before serious complications develop.
While cases involving multiple parasitic infections are uncommon, doctors emphasize that practicing good food hygiene, maintaining clean living conditions, and seeking timely medical care remain the best ways to reduce the risk of parasitic disease.
