Warning Signs That Cancer May Be Growing in Your Body: Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Cancer does not always announce itself with obvious pain or dramatic symptoms. In many cases, early changes can be subtle and may look like ordinary health problems. A persistent bruise, an unusual change in a fingernail, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing pain can have many possible causes — most of them not cancer. However, when unusual symptoms persist, worsen, or occur without an obvious explanation, they deserve medical attention.

The image highlights several changes that are sometimes discussed in connection with serious disease, including a dark streak under a fingernail, unexplained bruising, unusual marks on the skin, and persistent shoulder or joint discomfort. These signs should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that cancer is present. Instead, they can serve as reminders to pay attention to changes in your body.

Here are some warning signs worth knowing.

1. An Unusual Change in a Nail

A dark or black line appearing under a fingernail or toenail can have many explanations.

In some cases, it may result from trauma, bleeding, pigmentation, medications, or other benign conditions. However, a new dark streak that develops without an obvious injury deserves evaluation because, rarely, it can be associated with subungual melanoma, a type of melanoma that develops beneath the nail.

Pay particular attention when a streak:

  • Appears unexpectedly
  • Becomes wider or darker over time
  • Has irregular coloring
  • Extends onto the surrounding skin
  • Affects only one nail
  • Continues to change despite no known injury

A nail streak does not mean you have melanoma. But an unexplained, changing streak should not simply be ignored.

2. Bruising Without an Obvious Cause

Occasional bruises are extremely common. You can bump into something and not remember doing it, particularly if the injury was minor.

However, frequent or unexplained bruising can sometimes indicate an underlying medical problem.

Certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, liver problems, blood disorders, and other conditions can contribute to easy bruising. In some cases, abnormalities involving blood cells can also cause unusual bruising or bleeding.

Contact a healthcare professional if you suddenly begin developing many unexplained bruises, particularly if they occur together with:

  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Persistent fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Pale skin
  • Tiny red or purple spots on the skin
