One Step Before the Train
THE MAN HE RAN TOWARD THE TRAIN
Rain hammered the abandoned industrial complex as Alpha Team moved through the dark corridors.
Their mission was simple: locate the explosives hidden by enemy raiders and evacuate before the building was destroyed.
Sergeant Ethan Walker led the rear of the formation.
The air smelled of oil, smoke, and wet concrete.
Everything felt wrong.
Too quiet.
A sudden blast shook the floor.
Dust poured from the ceiling.
Emergency lights flickered red.
Then Ethan’s wrist device connected to the enemy detonator signal.
⏱️ 03:00
A recorded voice echoed through the corridor.
“Detonation in three minutes.”
The team froze.
Three minutes.
Not enough time to search the entire complex.
Not enough time to make mistakes.
Captain Marcus shouted:
“Everyone out! Move!”
The soldiers sprinted toward the exit.
Ethan followed for a few steps.
Then he stopped.
Through the smoke, he heard something.
A faint voice.
“Help…!”
He turned.
Corporal Ryan Miller had been trapped beneath a collapsed steel beam in a side room.
Ryan looked up in panic.
“Go! The building is going to blow!”
Ethan checked the timer.
⏱️ 02:21
He should have run.
Every second mattered.
Instead, he turned back.
Ryan stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
Ethan dropped beside the beam.
“Getting you out.”
Ryan shook his head desperately.
“You’ll die with me!”
Ethan gritted his teeth and pushed against the twisted steel.
It didn’t move.
Outside, the team reached the courtyard.
Captain Marcus looked around.
“Where’s Walker?”
No one answered.
Then they realized the truth.
He had gone back.
Inside the room, Ethan tried again.
The beam shifted slightly.
Ryan cried out in pain.
⏱️ 01:34
Sweat mixed with rain on Ethan’s face.
He wedged a metal pipe beneath the beam and used it as a lever.
The steel groaned.
Moved.
Just enough.
“Pull!” Ethan shouted.
Ryan dragged himself free.
The timer kept counting down.
⏱️ 00:58
The corridor behind them collapsed in another explosion.
Smoke filled the hallway.
Ryan stumbled.
His injured leg gave out.
Ethan grabbed him and forced him forward.
Outside, Captain Marcus suddenly heard a distant cough through the smoke.
Two figures emerged from the doorway.
One carrying the other.
The soldiers ran toward them.
⏱️ 00:19
“Run!” Ethan yelled.
They sprinted across the courtyard.
The countdown hit—
⏱️ 00:03
00:02
00:01
The entire building erupted behind them.
A wave of fire and debris threw the soldiers to the ground.
For several seconds, there was only ringing silence.
Marcus pushed himself up and searched through the smoke.
“Walker!”
A hand rose from the mud.
Ethan was alive.
Bruised, exhausted, barely conscious—but alive.
Ryan looked at him with tears in his eyes.
“You should have left me.”
Ethan laughed weakly.
“And listen to you complain about it for the rest of my life?”
Even Marcus smiled through the shock.
Later that night, the team sat in silence around the medical tent.
Ryan stared at Ethan for a long moment.
“When the timer started… I thought courage meant running fast enough to survive.”
Ethan looked at the rain outside.
“No.”
He spoke quietly.
“Courage is hearing the countdown and still turning back for someone else.”
“Anyone can run from danger. The brave are the ones who run back when someone is still inside.”
