3 things you should never place on top of your refrigerator

Many people have the habit of placing items on top of the refrigerator without realizing they are silently causing the appliance to deteriorate quickly and consume much more electricity. An electrician has pointed out the 3 items you should absolutely avoid placing on top of the fridge.

The refrigerator is an indispensable appliance in every household. It truly serves many functions and helps us store food conveniently. While refrigerators are widely used, there are many issues to be aware of. Ignoring these issues not only affects the lifespan of the appliance but also increases its energy consumption.

1. Plants

Many people want to bring some greenery into the kitchen to make the living space fresher and to purify the air. A lot of people think about placing plants or flower vases on top of the refrigerator for decoration, taking advantage of the space. However, this is not recommended. Plants need to be watered and fertilized frequently, creating a moist environment. Meanwhile, the refrigerator is an electrical appliance. It will face numerous problems if the surrounding humidity is too high.

Plants can also gather bacteria and insects. When you open the refrigerator door frequently, these microorganisms and pests can easily enter the fridge and affect the food you store.

Additionally, the refrigerator generates a lot of heat when it operates. High temperatures can negatively affect the plants, causing some types to wilt from the heat.

Placing a plant pot on top of the fridge can also put extra pressure on the appliance, affecting its operation.

2. Other Electronic Devices

Many families often use the space on top of the fridge to place other electronic devices such as microwaves. However, this is not advisable. Household appliances like microwaves can emit electromagnetic waves, causing interference and damaging the fridge's cooling system.

Moreover, a microwave can be quite heavy. Refrigerators are designed to stand alone and are not meant to bear the weight of other devices placed on top. Placing a heavy electronic device on top of the fridge will make it bear a large load, which can cause the refrigerator to work harder and increase electricity consumption.

Other electronic devices also emit heat when in use. This heat directly affects the refrigerator's ability to dissipate heat, causing it to overheat and shortening its lifespan.

3. Dust Covers

Many families feel that the living environment is too dusty and it's inconvenient to clean frequently, so they put a dust cover on top of the refrigerator. When cleaning, they simply remove the cover, shake off the dust, and put it back. However, refrigerators operate continuously day after day and require space to release heat. Placing a cloth on top of the fridge will directly impact the heat dissipation process, raising the temperature and reducing the cooling efficiency. Over time, this will reduce the lifespan of the refrigerator.
