Doctors Warn: 3 Common Foods That May Put Extra Stress on Your Kid.neys When Eaten Too Often
Many people ignore this daily habit until kidney problems begin.
Ignoring these bowel changes could delay early detection of colon polyps.
Colon polyps are abnormal growths that develop on the inner lining of the large intestine. While many polyps are harmless at first, some can gradually become colorectal cancer if they are not detected and removed early. Because polyps often cause few or no symptoms in their early stages, paying attention to changes during bowel movements can make a significant difference.
One real-life example highlights why early screening matters. A 29-year-old man experienced digestive discomfort for years but never underwent a colon examination. As his symptoms worsened, including frequent loose stools, doctors eventually recommended a colonoscopy after learning about his strong family history of colorectal cancer. The examination revealed hundreds of colon polyps, some of which had already developed into cancerous changes. His case underscores the importance of recognizing warning signs early and seeking medical attention rather than ignoring persistent symptoms.
Colon polyps can develop for many reasons. Age remains a major risk factor, but younger adults are increasingly being diagnosed as well. A diet high in processed meat and animal fat but low in fiber may increase the risk. Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease can also contribute to polyp formation. Genetics play a significant role, particularly in inherited conditions like familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Researchers also believe that an imbalance in gut bacteria may contribute to chronic inflammation and abnormal tissue growth.
Several bowel-related symptoms deserve attention:
1. Rectal bleeding
One of the most common warning signs is blood during or after a bowel movement. Bright red blood may appear on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl, while some bleeding is only detected through stool testing. Although hemorrhoids are a common cause of rectal bleeding, persistent or unexplained bleeding should always be evaluated.
2. Tissue protruding from the anus
Polyps located near the rectum may occasionally protrude during bowel movements. They often appear as soft, reddish tissue and may retract on their own afterward. This symptom should never be ignored, as only a medical examination can determine the exact cause.
3. Persistent changes in bowel habits
Long-lasting diarrhea, constipation, frequent urgency, or alternating episodes of both may indicate that large polyps are interfering with normal bowel function. If bowel habits change for several weeks without an obvious explanation, medical evaluation is recommended.
4. Abdominal pain or cramping
Larger polyps can partially block the intestine or become irritated during bowel contractions, causing intermittent cramping or abdominal discomfort. Pain that continues or worsens over time deserves prompt medical attention.
Fortunately, colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers because precancerous polyps can often be removed before they become dangerous. Colonoscopy remains the most effective screening method, allowing doctors to both detect and remove suspicious polyps during the same procedure. Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or inherited polyposis syndromes may need to begin screening earlier and repeat it more frequently based on their physician's advice.
Lifestyle also plays an important role in prevention. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains helps provide dietary fiber that supports healthy bowel function. Staying physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting processed and red meat, avoiding smoking, and reducing excessive alcohol intake may all help lower colorectal cancer risk.
Most importantly, persistent digestive symptoms should never be dismissed simply because they seem minor. While these warning signs do not necessarily mean cancer is present, they are signals that deserve proper medical evaluation. Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes and may even prevent cancer from developing altogether.
