5 Early War.ning Signs of Bre.ast Can.cer You Shouldn't Ignore

The following signs may be early warnings of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. However, when detected at an early stage, the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival are very high. Instead of waiting until pain develops (as early-stage breast cancer often causes no pain), women should pay close attention to these five early warning signs:

1. A Lump in the Breast or Underarm

This is the most common sign that you may notice during monthly breast self-examinations.

  • Characteristics: The lump is usually hard, has irregular edges, is painless, and remains fixed in one spot (does not move much when pressed).
  • Note: In addition to the breast itself, pay attention to the underarm area and around the collarbone, as lymph nodes in these areas may become swollen before a breast lump is large enough to be felt.

2. Changes in Breast Shape or Size

A slight difference between the two breasts is normal, but sudden changes should raise concern.

  • One breast suddenly becomes larger, droops, or appears unusually misshapen compared to the other.
  • When raising both arms above your head, the breasts do not move symmetrically.

3. Changes in the Skin Around the Breast

The growth of cancer cells can block lymphatic vessels beneath the skin, leading to the following changes:

  • Orange peel texture: The skin becomes thicker, pores enlarge, and the surface appears dimpled like an orange peel.
  • Dimpling or indentation: A part of the breast skin is pulled inward.
  • Color changes: The breast skin becomes red, swollen, flaky, or feels warm, resembling an infection that does not improve.

4. Nipple Changes

The nipple is a sensitive area that can reveal early warning signs.

  • Inverted nipple: If your nipple normally points outward but has recently become pulled inward and cannot return to its previous position.
  • Changes in the skin of the nipple area, especially the areola, such as scaling, cracking, or redness and inflammation.

5. Unusual Nipple Discharge

Except during breastfeeding, spontaneous nipple discharge should be evaluated by a doctor.

  • The discharge may be clear, straw-colored, or, more concerning, blood-stained.
  • It usually occurs in only one breast and flows out on its own without squeezing or pressure.

If you notice any of these signs, seek medical evaluation promptly. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and save lives.
