Recognizing early stroke warning signs may help you seek medical attention before a life-threatening emergency occurs.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide. While many people believe a stroke happens without warning, doctors say the body may sometimes show subtle symptoms days or even weeks beforehand. These early warning signs should never be ignored, especially if they appear suddenly or become more frequent.
Important: None of these symptoms alone confirms that a stroke is coming. If you or someone else develops sudden symptoms such as facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, or severe confusion, call emergency medical services immediately.
One of the earliest and most recognizable warning signs is weakness or numbness affecting one side of the body. This may involve the face, arm, hand, or leg and can come and go before a major stroke.
Feeling unusually dizzy, stumbling while walking, or having trouble maintaining balance—especially when accompanied by other neurological symptoms—deserves prompt medical evaluation.
Blurred vision, double vision, or brief vision loss in one or both eyes may occur when blood flow to the brain or eyes becomes temporarily reduced.
A sudden, intense headache unlike previous headaches, particularly when combined with nausea, dizziness, or confusion, can sometimes signal a serious vascular problem.
People may suddenly slur their speech, struggle to find words, or have trouble understanding simple conversations. Even if these symptoms disappear after a few minutes, they should be treated as a medical emergency.
Some people report unusual exhaustion or overwhelming fatigue in the days or weeks before a stroke, although this symptom alone is nonspecific and may have many causes.
A slight droop on one side of the face, difficulty smiling evenly, or numbness around the mouth can indicate reduced blood flow affecting facial muscles.
Unexplained tingling, pins-and-needles, or altered sensation affecting one side of the body may occur if nerves are temporarily deprived of adequate blood supply.
While no strategy can completely eliminate stroke risk, experts recommend:
Doctors recommend remembering FAST:
Rapid treatment can significantly improve recovery and reduce permanent brain damage.
Many stroke warning signs are subtle and may last only a few minutes before disappearing. These episodes can sometimes be transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), often called "mini-strokes," which are serious warning signs that require urgent medical evaluation. Acting quickly could prevent a larger, more disabling stroke in the future.
