A 48-Year-Old Woman Di.es from Diab.etes: Doctors Wa.rn...

It’s Better to Skip Breakfast Than Eat These 3 Types of Meals
These three types of breakfast may seem light and healthy, but they can come at a high cost.

Three years ago, Ms. Lin, a 48-year-old woman in China, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. From that point on, she became much more cautious about her lifestyle. She believed that as long as she ate a simple diet and exercised regularly, she could keep the disease under control.

Her daily breakfast usually consisted of a bowl of plain white rice porridge with a small amount of pickled vegetables. For lunch, she ate only half a bowl of rice with plenty of lightly stir-fried vegetables. In the evening, she almost completely eliminated carbohydrates, eating only a small piece of sweet potato and some cold cucumber salad. However, what puzzled her was that her blood sugar levels remained highly unstable, sometimes spiking dramatically and other times dropping rapidly.

Last Saturday morning, her family found her unconscious in her bedroom. Although she was rushed to the hospital immediately, doctors diagnosed her with diabetic ketoacidosis accompanied by hyperosmolar coma—an extremely dangerous acute complication of diabetes. Despite hours of intensive treatment, Ms. Lin passed away due to multiple organ failure.

Her family was shocked. How could someone who lived such a disciplined lifestyle with diabetes suddenly face such a tragic outcome? After reviewing her daily eating habits, doctors suggested that the problem may have been hidden within routines she believed were healthy.

Diabetes Is More Dangerous Than Many People Realize

Many people assume that diabetes is a disease of old age, but in reality, it can develop at any age, although it is more common among middle-aged and older adults. When blood sugar remains elevated for long periods, it silently damages the cardiovascular system, kidneys, and nervous system.

A study published in Diabetes Care found that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among people with diabetes, accounting for more than 40% of all diabetes-related deaths. The study followed 135,000 adults, of whom 10.5% had diabetes and 36.2% were in the prediabetes stage. Over six years, 5,517 deaths were recorded, including 1,428 among participants with diabetes.

Notably, the earlier diabetes develops, the greater the reduction in life expectancy. People diagnosed before the age of 40 may lose more than four years of expected lifespan on average. Certain groups—including individuals under 65, men, and those living in rural areas—also face a higher risk of death from cardiovascular complications.

A “Light” Breakfast Can Disrupt Blood Sugar All Day

According to Dr. Wang Kailiang, Head of the Endocrinology Department at the China General Emergency Hospital, breakfast is the first meal after 8–12 hours of overnight fasting. At this time, the body’s insulin sensitivity is still relatively low. Consuming large amounts of refined carbohydrates can therefore cause blood sugar levels to rise rapidly.

When blood sugar spikes too quickly after breakfast, it may trigger reactive hypoglycemia before lunch, causing people to feel hungrier and eat more during subsequent meals. This makes breakfast choices especially important.

Foods to Avoid for Breakfast
Overcooked white rice porridge.
Deep-fried buns or pastries made from refined wheat flour.
Fast foods such as hamburgers, French fries, and fried chicken.

These foods share several characteristics: they are high in calories, low in nutritional value, and can cause rapid increases in blood sugar that are difficult to control.

Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that a low-carbohydrate breakfast can help maintain better blood sugar control throughout the day. People who consume fewer carbohydrates at breakfast also tend to reduce their carbohydrate intake at lunch and dinner, indicating that a healthy breakfast can positively influence eating habits for the entire day.

A suitable breakfast for people with diabetes should combine protein, healthy fats, and a moderate amount of carbohydrates. Examples include unsweetened milk, eggs, green vegetables, and a small serving of corn or pumpkin.

If You Have Diabetes, Quit These 4 Bad Habits Early

In addition to taking medication as prescribed, people with diabetes should pay close attention to their lifestyle.

Lack of physical activity reduces the body's sensitivity to insulin.
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption damage blood vessels and make blood sugar harder to control.
Prolonged emotional stress can disrupt hormone balance and lead to blood sugar fluctuations.
Most importantly, changing medication doses without medical advice or taking medication inconsistently can cause significant blood sugar swings and increase the risk of complications.

Diabetes is a common chronic disease, but it does not mean people must accept a bleak future. With proper blood sugar management, a balanced diet, and a healthy lifestyle, individuals with diabetes can often enjoy a quality of life that is not significantly different from that of healthy individuals. The challenge is that some habits we believe are “good for our health” may actually need to be reconsidered more carefully.
