A 52-year-old man suffered irreversible kidney damage after years of routinely delaying urination despite repeated medical advice. His story highlights the importance of listening to your body and protecting kidney health through simple daily habits.
Many health problems develop gradually over the years, often beginning with seemingly harmless habits that people ignore every day. One such habit is delaying urination for extended periods. While doing so occasionally is unlikely to cause lasting harm in healthy individuals, making it a regular routine may increase the risk of urinary tract problems and put unnecessary stress on the bladder and kidneys.
According to reports, a 52-year-old man experienced severe kidney failure after maintaining the habit of holding his urine for years. Despite repeated warnings from doctors during routine medical examinations, he continued to believe that delaying urination was simply part of being hardworking and disciplined. Unfortunately, the long-term consequences proved devastating.
The man had previously worked in an industrial factory, where taking frequent restroom breaks was inconvenient. Over time, he became accustomed to suppressing the urge to urinate for long periods. Even after retirement, the habit remained unchanged. He could spend many hours watching television, playing games with friends, or using his phone without visiting the restroom, often ignoring obvious signals from his body.
Doctors reportedly advised him on multiple occasions that constantly delaying urination could increase the risk of bladder dysfunction, urinary tract infections, kidney complications, and other urinary system disorders. However, he dismissed the advice because he had not experienced any obvious symptoms for many years.
Eventually, his health began to deteriorate. He developed persistent lower back pain, swelling in both legs, fatigue, and significant changes in urination. Medical examination revealed severe kidney damage. By the time he sought emergency treatment, both kidneys had lost much of their ability to function properly.
Although doctors immediately provided intensive medical care, the damage was irreversible. Because the kidneys could no longer effectively filter waste products from the blood, he required long-term dialysis to perform the function that healthy kidneys normally provide.
Kidneys are responsible for removing waste, balancing body fluids, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining electrolyte balance. When urine remains in the bladder for excessive periods on a regular basis, pressure inside the urinary tract may increase. In some cases, this can contribute to urinary tract infections, bladder problems, or other complications. However, kidney failure usually results from multiple contributing factors rather than one habit alone, including diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, infections, or urinary obstruction.
Health experts recommend responding to the body's natural urge to urinate instead of regularly delaying bathroom visits. Staying well hydrated, maintaining good hygiene, managing chronic illnesses, and seeking medical care for persistent urinary symptoms all help protect long-term kidney health.
Warning signs that deserve prompt medical attention include blood in the urine, painful urination, swelling of the legs or face, persistent lower back pain, fever with urinary symptoms, or major changes in urine frequency or color. Early diagnosis often allows many kidney conditions to be treated before permanent damage occurs.
The man's experience serves as a reminder that everyday habits can influence long-term health. While occasionally postponing a restroom visit is common, repeatedly ignoring the urge to urinate should not become a routine. Paying attention to your body's signals and following medical advice may help prevent serious urinary tract and kidney complications in the future.
