What Menopause Really Feels Like: 9 Signs Many Women Overlook
A man ate three raw eggs every day in the hope that his hair would grow back. But does this method actually work?
Many people believe that eating a lot of eggs can help hair grow faster and reduce hair loss. However, a dermatologist in Taiwan recently warned that consuming eggs the wrong way may not only fail to improve hair growth, but could actually make baldness worse.
According to dermatologist Dr. Ko Po-Huan, he treated a male patient who had developed the habit of eating three raw eggs every morning in an attempt to restore his receding hairline. The man had been influenced by online claims suggesting that “eating more eggs can stimulate hair growth.”
Unfortunately, the results were not what he expected. Instead of seeing improvement, the patient experienced even more hair loss than before.
Dr. Ko explained that eggs do contain several nutrients that are essential for healthy hair growth.
High-quality protein is especially important because hair is made up of about 90% keratin, a structural protein that forms each strand of hair. Egg yolks are also rich in biotin, a vitamin that plays a key role in maintaining healthy hair follicles.
However, raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which binds strongly to biotin and prevents the intestines from absorbing it efficiently.
This means that regularly consuming raw eggs may reduce the body's ability to absorb biotin, potentially hindering hair growth and worsening hair loss.
Dr. Ko emphasized that this is why some people notice increased shedding the more raw eggs they consume.
According to Dr. Ko, if hair loss is caused by male pattern baldness, the primary factors are the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and genetics.
In such cases, simply adding more nutrients is unlikely to stop the gradual shrinking of hair follicles.
He compared the situation to “trying to repair the roof while the foundation is collapsing.” In other words, no matter how many nutrients you consume, they cannot overcome the influence of your genes.
Dr. Ko believes that anyone who wants to improve thinning hair or hair loss should first identify the underlying cause rather than relying solely on popular food remedies.
He recommends evaluating three key factors:
In addition to protein and biotin from eggs, the body also needs adequate amounts of iron, zinc, and vitamin D to maintain healthy hair.
According to the specialist, eggs remain an excellent food for hair health when consumed properly.
He recommends eating cooked eggs rather than raw ones so the body can absorb biotin more effectively. He also advises maintaining a balanced diet instead of relying too heavily on any single food.
If hair loss persists, the hairline recedes rapidly, or signs of male pattern baldness appear, individuals should consult a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.
