A quick five-second finger test has recently gone viral online after claims that it may help reveal early warning signs of lung cancer. Known as the “Schamroth Window Test,” the simple self-check focuses on changes in the fingers and nails that doctors call “finger clubbing.”
While the test is not a diagnosis, medical experts say it can sometimes point to underlying lung, heart, or digestive diseases — including certain forms of lung cancer.
The test is surprisingly simple. To perform it, place the nails of your index fingers or thumbs against each other.
Normally, a tiny diamond-shaped gap should appear between the nail beds. If that small “window” disappears, it may be a sign of finger clubbing — a condition where the fingertips enlarge and the nails curve downward.
Doctors say finger clubbing can develop gradually and is sometimes associated with reduced oxygen levels in the blood caused by lung disease.
According to medical reports, finger clubbing appears in around 35% of people with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type of lung cancer. It is far less common in small cell lung cancer.
Researchers believe lung disease may trigger changes in blood flow and tissue growth near the fingertips, causing swelling and nail curvature over time. Certain proteins linked to inflammation and abnormal blood vessel growth may also play a role.
The condition often develops slowly, making it difficult to notice in the beginning.
Common signs include:
Some people also describe their fingers as looking like “drumsticks.”
Health experts strongly emphasize that the finger test alone cannot confirm lung cancer.
Finger clubbing may also be linked to:
Some people with lung cancer may never develop clubbing at all.
That’s why doctors recommend medical screening if you notice abnormal nail changes or symptoms such as:
Lung cancer is often difficult to detect in its early stages because symptoms can remain subtle for months or even years.
Doctors say recognizing unusual body changes early — even in the fingers — may encourage people to seek medical attention sooner, improving treatment outcomes.
The viral finger test may seem simple, but it highlights an important message: the body often sends quiet warning signs before serious illness appears.
Although the Schamroth Window Test cannot diagnose lung cancer, experts say it can serve as a reminder to pay attention to unusual physical changes and seek professional medical advice when necessary.
