Why Your Left Side May Be a Better Sleeping Position?

Sleep position is one of those everyday habits that most people rarely think about. You get into bed, find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and hopefully wake up feeling refreshed.

But does the position you sleep in actually matter?

For some people, sleeping on the left side may offer certain advantages, particularly when it comes to nighttime heartburn and comfort during pregnancy. However, it isn't automatically the healthiest position for everyone.

Your ideal sleeping position depends on several factors, including your anatomy, existing health conditions, body size, mattress and pillow setup, and personal comfort.

So before you force yourself to sleep on your left side every night, it's worth understanding what the evidence actually suggests.

1. Left-Side Sleeping May Help With Acid Reflux

One of the most commonly discussed benefits of left-side sleeping involves acid reflux and heartburn.

When you lie down, gravity no longer helps keep stomach contents in the stomach as effectively as it does when you're upright.

Your sleeping position can therefore influence how easily stomach acid moves upward into the esophagus.

For many people with nighttime reflux, lying on the left side may reduce reflux episodes compared with lying on the right side or back.

The reason has to do with the anatomy of the stomach.

The stomach sits primarily on the left side of the upper abdomen. When you're lying on your left side, the position of the stomach relative to the esophagus may make it harder for stomach contents to flow upward.

This doesn't mean left-side sleeping cures GERD.

But for people who regularly experience nighttime heartburn, changing sleep position can be one useful lifestyle strategy.

2. It May Be Particularly Helpful During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is another situation where sleep position becomes especially important.

As pregnancy progresses, the uterus becomes larger and can place pressure on surrounding organs and major blood vessels.

Healthcare professionals often recommend side sleeping during later pregnancy, and many recommend the left side because it can be comfortable and may reduce pressure on major blood vessels.

The left-side position may also make it easier for some pregnant people to manage symptoms such as heartburn and shortness of breath.

That said, pregnant people don't need to panic if they wake up on their back or on the right side.

Sleep naturally involves movement.

If you're pregnant and have questions about the safest sleeping position for your particular situation, your obstetrician or midwife can provide individualized advice.

3. Your Circulation Is More Complicated Than a Simple “Left Side Is Best” Rule

You'll often see claims that sleeping on your left side dramatically improves circulation or "helps your heart pump blood."

The reality is more nuanced.

Your cardiovascular system is highly efficient, and healthy people don't generally need to sleep on one particular side to keep their blood circulating.

There are physiological reasons why left-side positioning can affect how the heart and major blood vessels interact with surrounding structures, but that doesn't mean everyone will experience a meaningful cardiovascular benefit from changing sleep position.

For most healthy adults, comfort and adequate sleep are more important than forcing a particular side-sleeping position.
