An 18-Year-Old Girl Suffered Severe Kid.ney Failure
A tragic case in China has sparked public concern about the hidden dangers of certain popular drinks among young people. An 18-year-old girl, surnamed Lin, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after experiencing extreme fatigue, swelling, and difficulty breathing. Doctors diagnosed her with severe kidney failure, warning that she was only hours away from death.
According to medical reports, Lin had been consuming a sweetened milk tea drink every day for nearly a year. This beverage, known for its rich flavor and high sugar content, is a favorite among teenagers and young adults. However, excessive daily intake put an immense strain on her kidneys, eventually leading to their near-complete shutdown.
The Dangerous Combo: Sugar, Creamers, and Additives
Doctors explained that many commercially sold milk teas contain extremely high levels of sugar, artificial creamers, and unhealthy fats. Regular consumption can cause a surge in blood sugar, increase blood pressure, and overwork the kidneys. Over time, this can lead to chronic kidney disease or even acute kidney failure, especially in people with an unbalanced diet and sedentary lifestyle.
“Her test results showed dangerously high creatinine levels, a clear sign of severe kidney damage,” said Dr. Zhao, the attending physician. “If she had delayed coming to the hospital, she might not have survived.”
Young People at Risk
Health experts warn that Lin’s case is not isolated. Many young people have made milk tea, sugary sodas, and energy drinks a daily habit. Combined with late-night schedules, stress, and lack of exercise, this lifestyle puts them at higher risk for kidney disease, obesity, and diabetes.
Expert Advice
To protect kidney health, doctors recommend:
-
Limit high-sugar drinks to occasional treats rather than daily consumption.
-
Stay hydrated with water or unsweetened tea.
-
Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
-
Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight and blood pressure.
Lin is now recovering under medical supervision, but her case serves as a sobering reminder that even widely loved drinks can turn deadly when consumed in excess.
