Attending a Class Reunion in a Torn Shirt and Taking Leftovers Home: Overwhelmed by the Class President's Message
The long message was sent by the class president to a woman after their class reunion.
"Like every year, I attended the class reunion during the days leading up to the Lunar New Year. For the past two years, my company has been struggling, forcing us to downsize several departments. As a result, I’ve had to take on more work.

Most days, I don’t even have time to eat properly, let alone go to a spa or shop for new clothes like before. Fortunately, the company is starting to stabilize, and we’re managing to hold on,” shared Lan Linh (35, from Shenzhen, China) in an emotional post about her childhood friends from elementary school. Her story has drawn much attention from netizens.
The Class Reunion
The class reunion began at 10 a.m. on a Sunday in December. Lan Linh arrived late because she came directly from work. By the time she got there, most of her 20 classmates had already arrived. The atmosphere was lively, with everyone catching up about the past year—talking about work, family, or weddings.
After a trip to the restroom, Lan Linh noticed that her shirt had a tear at the shoulder. She then remembered accidentally tearing it earlier in the day while checking stock in the warehouse. She had been so busy that she hadn’t gone home to change and had completely forgotten about it.
“At first, the tear was small, but with all the movement throughout the day, it got bigger. Now I understand why some friends kept asking me about my company’s situation, implying that things weren’t going well. I just gave vague answers and said everything was fine.
But I thought it wouldn’t matter—it’s a class reunion with close friends I’ve known for decades, all from the same hometown,” Lan Linh recalled.
She enjoyed the gathering, chatting and eating with her friends. By the end, there was a lot of leftover food since some dishes hadn’t even been touched. Many classmates left early due to their busy schedules.
The group decided to leave together after spending over three hours together.
Taking Leftovers Home
“When I saw the leftover food, someone said it would be a shame to throw it away and asked if anyone wanted to take it home. Without thinking much, I raised my hand and said I’d take it. I even asked the staff to pack it up for me.
Some friends joked that it could be taken home for pets, as throwing it away would be wasteful. However, I noticed some people glancing at me and whispering. I felt they were probably judging me.
I used to be well-off, with a successful business and a supportive husband. But after my husband passed away, finances worsened, and I’ve had to support my young children alone. Every penny counts now.
Also, I’ve been so busy lately that I don’t have much time to cook. Bringing the food home, reheating it, and eating it later didn’t seem like a bad idea,” she shared.
Lan Linh packed up the food, said her goodbyes, and went home. However, upon arriving, she received an unexpected message from Anh Thi, the class president.
The Message
“Lan Linh, are you going through a tough time? I know you might be hesitant to share, but if you need money or help, please let us know. We’ve been friends for decades, practically family, so don’t be shy. Everyone in the class cares about you and is willing to support you,” read the message.
The words brought tears to Lan Linh’s eyes. She felt overwhelmed with gratitude, especially since she had worried that others might judge her for her struggles or appearance.
Near the New Year, stories of class reunions revealing the “true faces of friends” during financial hardship are common on social media, which made her anxious about attending.
A Beautiful Story of Friendship
Feeling moved, Lan Linh decided to share her story online to spread positivity.
“I replied to the class president, explaining that I’m doing okay and even clarified the torn shirt (laughs). I also explained why I took the food home and thanked everyone for their kindness,” she added.
Her story is a reminder of the warmth of true friendship and the support that long-time bonds can offer during difficult times.
