Be Careful: What Your Teeth May Be Telling You About Your Health

Unusual enamel changes may signal more than poor brushing habits.

Many people assume that yellowing, sensitivity, or unusual textures on their teeth are caused by coffee, sugary drinks, or inconsistent dental care. While those factors can certainly affect oral health, some dental changes begin much earlier and stem from a condition that develops as teeth are forming.

In certain cases, unusual enamel patterns may be linked to a rare genetic disorder known as Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI). This condition affects the development of tooth enamel—the hard, protective outer layer that shields teeth from daily wear and tear. When enamel does not form properly, teeth may appear discolored, pitted, rough, unusually small, or more fragile than normal.
