Before the Vows Broke
Three days before the wedding, Emma Parker still believed she was the happiest woman in the world.
The apartment was filled with white flowers, wedding invitations, and unopened gifts. She was checking the guest list when her fiancé’s phone vibrated on the table.
The screen lit up.
“I miss you already – Sophie.”
Emma froze.
Sophie was Lucas’s coworker.
She stared at the message for a few seconds and forced a faint smile.
“It’s probably just a friend.”
But when Lucas came out of the bathroom and quickly grabbed his phone, her heart sank.
Emma: “What did Sophie want?”
Lucas avoided her eyes.
Lucas: “Work stuff.”
Emma: “She misses you because of work?”
He paused for a second, then let out an awkward laugh.
Lucas: “You’re just stressed about the wedding.”
Emma wanted to believe him.
So she did.
That night, Lucas said he had to meet a client.
As soon as the door closed behind him, Emma felt a strange uneasiness.
She was not the type to check phones or spy on the person she loved. But for the first time in her life, she opened Lucas’s laptop.
The password was still her birthday.
That hurt more.
The inbox appeared.
Dozens of emails between Lucas and Sophie.
Not work.
Not friendship.
Photos.
Love messages.
Plans for the future.
And one sentence that made Emma go numb:
“After the wedding, give me a little more time. I can’t leave her yet.”
She read it again and again until her tears blurred the screen.
Can’t leave her yet.
So she was the one being kept.
Lucas came home around midnight.
He found Emma sitting in the dark.
The laptop was open in front of her.
Her face was wet with tears.
Lucas turned pale.
Lucas: “Emma…”
Emma: “How long?”
He said nothing.
Emma: “How long?”
Lucas: “Six months.”
The answer cut through her like a knife.
Emma let out a broken laugh.
Emma: “Six months… and we’re getting married in three days.”
Lucas stepped toward her.
Lucas: “I was going to end it with her.”
Emma: “When? After the honeymoon?”
Lucas: “It’s not that simple.”
Emma stood up, trembling.
Emma: “The simplest thing in the world is not betraying the person who loves you.”
Lucas tried to take her hand.
Lucas: “I still love you.”
Emma pulled away.
Emma: “Don’t use that word anymore.”
The next morning, Emma called Daniel Carter, her closest friend.
When he saw her swollen eyes, he immediately knew something was wrong.
She showed him the emails.
Daniel read them in silence.
Then he closed his eyes briefly.
Emma stared at him.
Emma: “You knew, didn’t you?”
He didn’t answer right away.
That was the answer.
Emma: “You knew?”
Daniel: “I suspected.”
Emma: “Since when?”
Daniel: “About two months ago.”
Emma stepped back.
Emma: “The two most important men in my life knew, and I was the only one who didn’t.”
Daniel: “I didn’t have proof.”
Emma: “But you had a feeling.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Daniel: “I was afraid of hurting you.”
Emma burst into tears.
Emma: “And this doesn’t hurt?”

The wedding day still came.
The church was full of guests.
Lucas stood at the altar in a perfect black suit.
Everyone turned as the doors opened.
Emma appeared in her white wedding dress.
But there was no bouquet in her hands.
She walked slowly toward Lucas.
The church fell completely silent.
Lucas whispered:
Lucas: “Thank you for coming.”
Emma looked at him for a long moment.
Then she took out her phone, opened the photo of Lucas holding Sophie, and raised it for everyone to see.
Whispers spread through the church.
Lucas’s face went white.
Lucas: “Emma, don’t do this.”
Her voice trembled, but it was clear.
Emma: “You did this to me first.”
She turned to the guests.
Emma: “I cannot marry a man who has been cheating on me for six months.”
Lucas’s mother began to cry.
Emma’s father stood frozen in shock.
Lucas stepped closer.
Lucas: “I’m sorry.”
Emma looked at him as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Emma: “The most painful part isn’t that you loved someone else.”
Her voice broke.
Emma: “It’s that you let me keep loving you.”
She removed the engagement ring and placed it in Lucas’s hand.
Then she turned and walked out of the church.
No one stopped her.
Outside, rain was falling.
Daniel stood beneath the entrance, guilt written across his face.
He took a step toward her.
Daniel: “Emma…”
She looked at him.
Emma: “Don’t tell me everything will be okay.”
Daniel stayed silent.
Emma took a deep breath.
Emma: “Today I lost the man I was supposed to marry.”
She wiped away her tears.
Emma: “And I lost my faith in love.”
Daniel spoke softly.
Daniel: “Not everyone will betray you.”
Emma looked out at the rain.
Emma: “Maybe.”
She stepped down the church stairs.
Emma: “But first I need to learn how to trust myself again.”
Daniel did not try to stop her.
He only stood there, watching her walk away in the rain, the long white dress trailing behind her like a dream that had just shattered.
And for the first time in many years, Emma walked away alone.
Not because she was weak.
But because she had finally chosen herself instead of staying in a love that no longer deserved her.
