Cracking an egg and discovering a small red or brown spot inside the yolk can be surprising—and even unsettling. Many people immediately assume the egg is spoiled or unsafe to eat. However, these spots, commonly known as blood spots, are actually a natural occurrence in eggs and are more common than you might think.
Blood spots form when a tiny blood vessel in the hen’s reproductive system ruptures during the egg formation process. This results in a small trace of blood being trapped inside the egg. Contrary to popular belief, this does not indicate that the egg is fertilized or that it contains an embryo.
In most cases, eggs with small blood spots are perfectly safe to consume, especially if they are fresh and properly stored. The presence of a blood spot does not mean the egg is contaminated or spoiled. In fact, commercial egg producers often use special lighting techniques, called candling, to detect and remove eggs with visible imperfections before they reach consumers.
If you encounter a blood spot at home, you can simply remove it with the tip of a knife or spoon before cooking. Once the egg is fully cooked, any potential bacteria are eliminated, making it safe for consumption.
However, there are a few exceptions. If the egg has an unusual odor, discoloration beyond a small spot, or a strange texture, it is best to discard it. These signs may indicate spoilage rather than a harmless natural variation.
To ensure safety and quality, it is important to select and store eggs properly. Always check the expiration date when purchasing eggs, and choose cartons that are clean and uncracked. Once at home, store eggs in the refrigerator at a consistent temperature.
A simple freshness test involves placing an egg in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs will sink and lie flat, while older eggs may stand upright or float. While this test helps determine freshness, it does not relate directly to the presence of blood spots.
Cooking eggs thoroughly is another key step in food safety. Avoid consuming raw or undercooked eggs, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, or young children.
Finding a blood spot in an egg can be unexpected, but it is usually harmless and part of natural egg production. Understanding what these spots are—and what they are not—can help you make informed decisions in the kitchen without unnecessary concern.
Instead of discarding eggs automatically, take a closer look and rely on proper food safety practices. In most cases, your breakfast is still perfectly safe to enjoy.
