Can.cer May Reveal Itself Through These 2 Nighttime Warning Signs — Everyone Should Be Aware
If you experience any of the following canc.er warning signs, it’s important to speak with a doctor.
There are over 200 different types of cancer that can occur in the human body. Typically, symptoms vary depending on where the cancer develops. However, some warning signs are more generalized — making them easier to overlook. Interestingly, certain symptoms can become especially noticeable at night.
According to experts from Cancer Research UK, experiencing severe night sweats or insomnia could be potential signs of cancer.
That said, these symptoms can also be caused by a wide range of other conditions and do not automatically indicate cancer. Still, if you’re dealing with unusual sleep disturbances or unexplained excessive night sweating, it’s best to get checked by a healthcare professional.
Cancer Research UK advises:
“It’s important to know what’s normal for your body and speak to a doctor if you notice anything unusual or any symptoms that don’t go away. This could help detect cancer at an early stage when it’s easier to treat successfully.”
1. Night Sweats
Night sweats are often blamed on room temperature, weather, or sharing a bed. However, Cancer Research UK recommends seeking medical advice if you experience “drenching night sweats” or unexplained fever, as these can be symptoms of serious illnesses, including lymphoma.
The UK National Health Service (NHS) also advises that excessive sweating during sleep — enough to soak through your bedding — should be checked by a medical professional.
“If you regularly wake up to soaked bedsheets, you should see your doctor. Night sweats mean sweating so heavily at night that your nightclothes and bedding are soaking wet, even when your bedroom is cool.”
Types of cancer commonly associated with night sweats include:
-
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
-
Hodgkin lymphoma
-
Carcinoid tumours
-
Leukaemia
-
Mesothelioma
-
Bone cancer
-
Prostate cancer
-
Kidney cancer
-
Germ cell tumours
-
Advanced medullary thyroid cancer

2. Insomnia
Insomnia affects a large portion of the population — about 1 in 3 people will struggle with sleep at some point. Causes can include stress, anxiety, medical conditions, or trauma.
Cancer Research UK notes that persistent insomnia may also be a symptom of cancer. It can result from pain, cancer-related illness, treatment side effects, or emotional distress like anxiety and depression, which often accompany a cancer diagnosis.
“If you have ongoing trouble sleeping, it can affect your daily life. You might feel extremely tired, low on energy, unfocused, irritable, and overwhelmed.”
Other General Warning Signs of Cancer:
-
Fatigue
-
Unexplained bleeding or bruising
-
Persistent pain or aches
-
Sudden unexplained weight loss
-
Lumps or unusual swelling
If you notice any of these symptoms without a clear cause, it's crucial to see a doctor for further evaluation. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes.
