9. Get Enough Rest

If mucus is related to a cold or respiratory infection, your body needs time to recover.

Adequate sleep and rest support normal immune function.

Trying to push through an illness while sleeping poorly can make you feel considerably worse.

Rest, hydration, and appropriate symptom management are often more useful than constantly searching for a powerful “detox” remedy.

10. Don't Automatically Reach for Antibiotics

One common misconception is that thick yellow or green mucus automatically means you need antibiotics.

That's not necessarily true.

Mucus can change color during viral infections because of immune cells and other substances.

Antibiotics treat certain bacterial infections, not viral colds.

Taking antibiotics when they aren't needed can cause side effects and contributes to antibiotic resistance.

If your symptoms suggest a bacterial infection or another condition requiring treatment, a healthcare professional can determine whether antibiotics are appropriate.

When Phlegm Could Be a Warning Sign

Most short-term mucus is not dangerous.

However, persistent or severe symptoms should not simply be ignored.

Seek medical advice if you have:

  • Cough lasting several weeks
  • Persistent or increasing amounts of phlegm
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain
  • Recurrent respiratory infections
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Significant fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing

And coughing up blood should always be taken seriously, particularly if the amount is more than a small streak.

Seek urgent medical attention for significant coughing of blood, severe breathing difficulty, blue or gray lips, severe chest pain, confusion, or other signs of a medical emergency.

What Color Does Your Phlegm Mean?

Mucus color can sometimes provide clues, but it is not a diagnosis.

Clear or white mucus can occur with normal secretions, allergies, or viral illnesses.

Yellow or green mucus can occur during infections but does not automatically prove that the infection is bacterial.

Brown mucus can occur after exposure to smoke or inhaled particles, among other causes.
