Chosen by the Heart

In the kingdom of Elarion, everyone admired Princess Isabella. She was radiant, graceful, and surrounded by attention wherever she went. Poets wrote songs about her beauty, and princes traveled across distant lands hoping to win her heart.
Few people noticed her younger sister, Princess Elena.
Elena preferred books, gardens, and quiet afternoons by the palace lake. Standing beside Isabella, she often felt invisible. At banquets, people greeted her sister first. At festivals, children ran toward Isabella. Even the king spoke proudly of his eldest daughter while barely realizing Elena was standing nearby.
Over time, Elena learned to smile softly and step back.
Many years earlier, when Prince Adrian of Valoria was only twelve, he secretly escaped his royal escort to explore the forest near Elarion. A violent storm suddenly swept through the woods. His horse panicked, throwing him down a rocky slope beside a stream.
Adrian injured his leg and could not move.
Rain poured heavily, and darkness slowly surrounded him. For the first time in his life, the young prince was truly afraid.
Then a small figure appeared through the storm.
A girl in a simple pale-blue dress, carrying a basket of wildflowers, knelt beside him.
Elena: “You’re hurt.”
Adrian: “Please… don’t leave me.”
Without asking who he was, the girl tore a strip from her scarf and wrapped his bleeding leg. She gathered dry branches, lit a small fire, and stayed beside him through the cold night.
When Adrian trembled from fear, she held his hand.
Elena: “Don’t be afraid. Someone will come for you.”
At dawn, the royal guards finally found the missing prince. Before they reached him, the girl placed a single white rose in his hand.
Elena: “Keep this. White roses bring people back to the ones they’re meant to find.”
She disappeared into the forest before Adrian could ask her name.
From that day on, he never forgot her eyes.
Years passed.
The white rose, now dried and fragile, remained hidden inside Adrian’s favorite book. He searched for the mysterious girl in every town he visited, but he never found her.
Then came the grand winter ball at the palace of Elarion.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the marble hall, music filled the air, and nobles from every kingdom gathered to celebrate.
As expected, Princess Isabella was surrounded by admirers.
Elena stood alone near the balcony, watching the snow fall over the palace gardens.
Adrian entered the hall with no interest in competing for the most beautiful woman in the room. He had come carrying only a memory.
When Elena turned toward the balcony light, Adrian froze.
Those eyes.
That gentle expression.
And on her wrist was a small braided bracelet made of dried grass—the same bracelet the girl in the forest had worn years ago.
His heart recognized her before his mind did.
Adrian walked toward her while the rest of the hall remained focused on Isabella.
Adrian: “May I sit here?”
Elena looked surprised.
Elena: “Shouldn’t you be dancing with my sister?”
Adrian: “I was invited to the ball, not to compete with twenty other men.”
Elena laughed softly.
It was the first time anyone had made her feel seen.
Over the following weeks, Adrian sought Elena’s company whenever he visited Elarion. They walked through the gardens at dawn, read poetry in the library, and spoke about dreams they had never shared with anyone else.
With him, Elena did not need to be perfect.
She only needed to be herself.
One spring afternoon, Adrian found her watering white roses in the greenhouse.
Adrian: “Why do you always choose white roses?”
Elena: “Because they remind me that kindness is quieter than beauty.”
Adrian looked at her for a long moment.
Adrian: “And sometimes kindness is what saves a life.”
Elena frowned slightly, not understanding.
When news of their growing affection spread through the palace, whispers followed them everywhere.
Noblewoman 1: “Why would the Prince of Valoria choose the younger princess?”
Noblewoman 2: “He must pity her.”
Even the king summoned Adrian.
King: “My eldest daughter would make a stronger queen.”
Adrian: “Your Majesty, I am not choosing a queen for my kingdom. I am choosing the woman I love.”
That evening, Elena stood by the lake, troubled by the rumors.
Elena: “Tell me honestly. Do you love me because you feel sorry for me?”
Adrian reached into his coat and carefully removed a small dried white rose.
Elena stared at it in shock.
Adrian: “Do you remember a storm in the forest many years ago?”
Her eyes widened.
Elena: “The injured boy…”
Adrian: “That boy was me.”
Tears filled her eyes.
Adrian: “When I was frightened, alone, and unable to walk, you stayed beside me without knowing I was a prince.”
He stepped closer.
Adrian: “Everyone else sees a forgotten princess.”
Adrian: “I see the girl who gave me warmth on the coldest night of my life.”
A tear rolled down Elena’s cheek.
Adrian: “I do not love you because you are a princess.”
Adrian: “I love you because before you knew who I was, you chose to stay.”
Elena began to cry softly.
Elena: “I thought no one would ever choose me.”
Adrian gently took her hands.
Adrian: “I have been choosing you since the day you placed a white rose in my hand.”
Months later, the royal wedding was held in the palace gardens.
There were no desperate princes competing for the bride, no glittering contest for attention.
Only one man waiting beneath an arch of white roses.
As Elena walked toward him, she remembered every moment she had spent feeling invisible.
Adrian smiled through tears.
Adrian: “You were never the princess no one chose.”
He kissed her forehead.
Adrian: “You were the princess I crossed a kingdom to find.”
White petals drifted through the air as the bells of Elarion rang across the valley.
And Elena finally understood that the most beautiful love is not the love that dazzles the world.
It is the love that remembers your kindness, waits through the years, and looks into your heart and says:
Adrian: “I choose you.”
