Chapter 2: What Garlic, Lemon, and Honey Can Actually Do
Each ingredient in this traditional remedy offers something different, although their benefits should not be exaggerated.
Garlic: Garlic contains sulfur-containing compounds, including allicin, which forms when fresh garlic is crushed or chopped. Researchers have studied garlic for its potential antimicrobial and other biological effects. However, laboratory findings do not establish that eating garlic treats bronchitis or eliminates a respiratory infection in humans.
Garlic can be included in an ordinary diet, but consuming large quantities may cause heartburn, nausea, or digestive discomfort. Garlic supplements can also interact with certain medications, including medicines that affect blood clotting.
Lemon: Lemon juice provides vitamin C, which supports normal immune function and helps the body absorb iron from plant foods. However, vitamin C is not a guaranteed treatment for an existing respiratory infection, and drinking lemon juice does not directly remove mucus from the lungs.
People with acid reflux may find that lemon juice worsens their symptoms because of its acidity.
Honey: Honey has the strongest practical evidence for symptom relief among these three ingredients. Some studies suggest that honey can modestly reduce coughing, particularly nighttime cough associated with upper respiratory infections.
Its thick texture may help soothe an irritated throat, although it does not eliminate the underlying infection.
