Persistent mucus production can sometimes be associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), particularly in people with a history of smoking or significant exposure to lung irritants.

Chronic bronchitis is characterized by a productive cough occurring over an extended period.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Reduced exercise tolerance
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Persistent cough

These symptoms should be evaluated rather than assumed to be a normal consequence of aging or smoking.

Early assessment can help identify lung disease and provide opportunities to reduce further damage.

7. Acid Reflux Can Also Affect Your Throat

Not all chronic throat mucus is caused by the respiratory system.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and related forms of reflux can irritate the throat and contribute to coughing, throat clearing, hoarseness, or a sensation of mucus.

Some people experience classic heartburn.

Others may primarily notice throat symptoms.

Reflux-related symptoms may become more noticeable after large meals or when lying down.

If chronic throat clearing occurs alongside sour taste, heartburn, hoarseness, or symptoms that worsen after eating, reflux may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

What Does the Color of Phlegm Mean?

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of mucus.

People often assume:

Clear = healthy

Yellow = bacterial infection

Green = serious infection

But it isn't that simple.

Mucus can change color during an infection because of immune cells and inflammatory processes. Green or yellow mucus does not automatically mean that you need antibiotics.

Likewise, clear mucus does not guarantee that everything is perfectly normal.
