Chapter 2: Changes in Breast Shape, Size, or Skin

A breast does not have to contain an obvious lump for a noticeable change to deserve attention.

Sometimes the first thing a person notices is that one breast looks different from how it normally appears.

Breasts are naturally asymmetrical. One breast may be slightly larger than the other, and this can be completely normal. The important issue is a new change in size, shape, or contour that was not previously present.

A person might notice that one breast suddenly appears swollen or that the shape seems different when viewed in a mirror. The nipple may appear to point in a different direction, or part of the breast may seem pulled inward.

Changes in the skin can also be significant.

The skin over a breast may become red, swollen, thicker, or unusually textured. One possible appearance that doctors take seriously is skin that becomes dimpled or develops an appearance sometimes compared with the texture of an orange peel. This is known as peau d'orange.

However, redness and swelling can also result from infections such as mastitis, especially during breastfeeding.

That distinction is important because the same visible symptom can have completely different causes.

Another change worth noticing is persistent swelling that does not resolve. If one breast suddenly becomes noticeably larger or heavier without an obvious explanation, professional evaluation can help determine why.

Breast cancer can also occasionally cause changes in the contour of the breast. A previously smooth area might develop an indentation or appear pulled inward.

Again, this does not automatically indicate cancer. Trauma, surgery, scarring, infections, hormonal changes, and benign conditions can also alter breast appearance.

The key principle is change from your normal baseline.

Rather than trying to determine the cause by comparing your symptoms with photographs online, document the change and discuss it with a healthcare professional.

Early evaluation can help distinguish ordinary variations from conditions that require further investigation.
