The small house was decorated with pink balloons and paper stars.

Tonight was Mia’s seventh birthday.

She kept running to the window, looking down the dark street outside.

Her mother, Sarah, tried to smile.

“Daddy will try to come, sweetheart.”

Mia shook her head.

“He always says that.”

On the table sat a birthday cake with a single candle still unlit.

Her father’s chair remained empty.

Far away in the mountains, Sergeant Jake Miller was leading a rescue operation after a massive landslide.

Rain poured down relentlessly.

Mud and rocks continued sliding down the slope.

Jake checked his watch.

7:42 PM.

The birthday party had already started.

He took out his phone and tried to call his daughter.

The call had not even connected when a loud explosion echoed through the valley.

The ground shook violently.

A rescue vehicle had become trapped under a wall of mud.

Inside were a mother and a little girl.

Jake looked at the phone in his hand.

Then he put it back into his pocket and ran toward the trapped vehicle.

Back at home, Mia blew out the candle in silence.

There was no laughter.

No birthday song from her father.

She hugged her teddy bear and whispered,

“Mom, did Daddy forget me again?”

Sarah could not answer.

At that moment, the television flashed with breaking news.

“A secondary landslide has trapped several rescuers. Communication has been lost.”

Sarah’s face turned pale.

Jake’s unit name appeared on the screen.

At the disaster site, Jake dug through the mud with his bare hands.

A fellow rescuer shouted,

“Jake, the slope is collapsing! Get back!”

But inside the vehicle, the little girl was crying.

Jake pulled out his wallet for a second.

A photo of Mia looked back at him.

He closed the wallet and kept digging.

He forced open the damaged door and pulled the mother out.

As he reached for the little girl, another wave of mud crashed down.

The rescuers screamed.

Jake disappeared beneath the muddy cloud.

At home, Sarah held Mia tightly in front of the television.

Tears rolled down her face.

Mia trembled.

“Is Daddy coming home?”

Sarah had no answer.

An hour later, the doorbell rang.

Sarah opened the door with red, tear-filled eyes.

Jake was not there.

A soldier stood outside holding a small box.

Sarah nearly collapsed.

The soldier spoke softly.

“Ma’am… Sergeant Miller asked us to deliver this if he couldn’t make it in time.”

Inside the box was a handmade bracelet.

A note was folded beneath it.

“Princess, if I’m late, don’t be angry. Sometimes helping someone else is the fastest way for me to become the father I want to be.”

Mia began to cry.

At that exact moment, the sound of a rescue vehicle stopped outside the house.

Sarah turned toward the door.

Jake stepped out, covered in mud and bruises.

Mia ran across the yard.

“Daddy!”

Jake dropped to his knees and held her tightly.

“I’m sorry I’m late.”

Mia was crying so hard she could barely speak.

“Did you save the little girl?”

Jake nodded.

Mia looked at him for a long moment.

Then she whispered,

“Then I’m not angry anymore.”

For the first time in years, Jake began to cry.

Sarah wrapped her arms around both of them.

Inside the small house, the birthday cake was still waiting on the table.

This time, Jake lit the final candle himself.

“Sometimes a soldier arrives late not because he loves his family less, but because he was fighting to bring another family back together.”
