The Growing Global Plastic Crisis

Plastic pollution has become one of the most significant environmental challenges of the modern era.

Single-use items such as shopping bags, packaging materials, bottles, food containers, and disposable utensils are among the most frequently recovered forms of marine litter. Many of these products are designed to be used for only a few minutes but may persist in the environment for hundreds of years.

Scientists have found plastic waste on remote islands, Arctic ice, coral reefs, deep-sea habitats, and even inside marine animals.

Microplastics—tiny particles created when larger plastics break apart—have become especially concerning. These particles have been detected in seawater, seafood, drinking water, and numerous ecosystems worldwide.

The discovery of plastic in the Mariana Trench demonstrates that no part of the planet is completely isolated from this growing problem.

Impact on Marine Life

Plastic pollution affects marine life in many ways.

Animals may mistake floating debris for food, leading to injury, malnutrition, or death. Sea turtles can confuse plastic bags with jellyfish, while seabirds often ingest small plastic fragments that accumulate in their digestive systems.

Entanglement presents another serious threat. Fishing gear, ropes, and discarded plastic materials can trap marine animals, restricting movement and causing injury.

Deep-sea ecosystems are particularly vulnerable because many species grow slowly and reproduce less frequently than their counterparts in shallower waters. Damage to these habitats may take decades or centuries to reverse.
