The first factor is food. Cockroaches are not selective eaters. They can survive on crumbs, grease, food residue, paper, cardboard, pet food, and even substances that many people would not consider edible. A few crumbs under an appliance, a sticky spill behind a cabinet, or improperly sealed food containers may provide enough nutrition to sustain them.

This does not necessarily mean a home is dirty. Even clean homes can contain hidden food sources that are difficult to notice during routine cleaning. Kitchens, dining areas, and food storage spaces are often the first places cockroaches investigate.

The second major factor is water. Like all living creatures, cockroaches require moisture to survive. Leaky pipes, dripping faucets, damp basements, wet sponges, and condensation around appliances can all create attractive conditions. In many cases, a recurring cockroach problem may indicate excessive moisture somewhere inside the property.

Shelter is another important requirement. Cockroaches prefer dark, warm, and protected locations where they can remain hidden during the day. Cluttered storage areas, stacks of cardboard boxes, piles of newspapers, and crowded cabinets offer ideal hiding spots. The more concealed spaces available, the easier it becomes for cockroaches to establish a population without being detected.

Access is the final piece of the puzzle. Cockroaches are remarkably skilled at finding entry points into homes. Small cracks in walls, gaps around utility pipes, spaces beneath doors, damaged window seals, and poorly maintained vents can all provide easy access. Once they find a way inside, they can quickly explore the property in search of food and water.
