Both Husband and Wife Suffered Back Pain—Doctors Discover Their Bones Were Being “Eroded” by a Hidden Culprit Found in Many Homes

What started as unexplained back pain turned into a shocking diagnosis for a couple—one that revealed a hidden health risk many families may overlook.

From back pain to a serious condition

A 61-year-old woman in Fujian (China) had been experiencing severe lower back pain for over a month. Even simple movements caused intense discomfort. She also had recurring fevers, sometimes reaching 39°C.

Although her fever improved after initial treatment, the back pain persisted, affecting her daily life and work.

During a detailed consultation, doctors noticed something unusual: her husband had similar symptoms but had not yet sought medical help.

A surprising diagnosis

After further testing, both husband and wife were diagnosed with brucellosis-related spondylitis, a serious infection affecting the spine.

Blood tests confirmed they were positive for brucellosis antibodies, and MRI scans showed clear signs of inflammation in the lumbar spine.

In the husband’s case, the infection had become severe—causing pus formation and spreading into the spinal canal. This put him at risk of paralysis, muscle weakness, and even loss of bladder control.

The hidden culprit: a common food-related infection

Doctors identified the cause as Brucella bacteria, commonly found in infected animals such as sheep, cows, and pigs.

The bacteria can be transmitted through:

  • Drinking unpasteurized milk
  • Eating undercooked or raw meat
  • Contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids

Once inside the body, the bacteria can travel through the bloodstream and “erode” bone tissue, particularly in the spine—leading to chronic inflammation and damage.

Why it’s dangerous—and often misdiagnosed

Brucellosis-related spinal infections are often mistaken for:

  • Herniated discs
  • Tuberculosis of the spine

This can delay proper treatment.

Doctors warn that:

  • Early treatment can lead to full recovery
  • Delayed treatment may result in permanent disability

Treatment and recovery

The couple underwent anti-infection therapy followed by surgery to remove infected tissue and stabilize the spine using bone grafts and internal fixation.

Fortunately, both recovered well after treatment.

Warning signs you shouldn’t ignore

Doctors advise seeking medical attention if you experience:

  • Persistent lower back pain
  • Recurrent fever
  • Fatigue and body aches
  • Numbness or nerve compression symptoms

Especially if you:

  • Work with livestock
  • Consume raw dairy or undercooked meat

How to prevent this condition

To reduce risk, experts recommend:

  • Avoid drinking raw (unpasteurized) milk
  • Always cook meat thoroughly
  • Wear protective gear when handling animals
  • Maintain proper hygiene and sanitation

The bottom line

A simple symptom like back pain can sometimes signal a serious underlying condition.

This case highlights the importance of safe eating habits and early medical check-ups—because what seems harmless in daily life could carry hidden risks.
