Doctors Reveal: A Simple Coffee Habit Left a Young Woman’s Stomach in Critical Condition

A 24-year-old woman in Vietnam was recently hospitalized with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and signs of internal bleeding.

1. Shocking Medical Case

The cause? A seemingly harmless habit practiced by millions every day: drinking coffee on an empty stomach.

2. The Morning Routine That Turned Dangerous

Like many young adults, the woman had developed a routine of starting her day with a strong cup of coffee, often skipping breakfast due to a busy schedule. She admitted she had done this for months, believing it helped boost energy and focus. However, over time, her body began to show signs of trouble.

3. What the Doctors Found

After performing endoscopy, doctors discovered extensive damage to her stomach lining, caused by increased acid production triggered by caffeine on an empty stomach. Without food to buffer the acid, her stomach had gradually developed multiple ulcers, some of which began to bleed—a life-threatening condition if not treated promptly.

4. A Common Mistake Many People Make

Medical experts say this case is far from unique. “Drinking coffee without eating first may seem harmless, but it can disrupt your digestive system,” explained one gastroenterologist. “It increases acid levels, irritates the stomach lining, and can lead to gastritis or ulcers over time—especially in people with sensitive stomachs.”

5. How to Protect Your Stomach

Doctors recommend always eating something light before consuming coffee, such as a banana, toast, or oatmeal. People with a history of acid reflux, gastritis, or ulcers should be particularly cautious. It’s also advised to limit coffee intake to 1–2 cups per day and avoid drinking it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
