When the kidneys weaken, the body sends out many warning signals, including abnormal signs on the skin.
One of the most important functions of the kidneys is to remove all toxins and waste from the blood. When kidney function declines, toxins can accumulate in the body and start causing symptoms on the skin.
According to News Medical, kidney disease can cause a variety of skin disorders. In fact, about 50–100% of patients with end-stage kidney disease have at least one skin condition.
Dry skin
Many people with kidney disease report that their skin becomes dry and rough. Patients may also experience scaling and cracking of the skin, which causes discomfort. News Medical notes that about 50–75% of dialysis patients face this problem.
Cracks in the skin may increase the risk of infections caused by viruses or bacteria in the environment.
Skin pigmentation disorders
In fact, about 25–70% of dialysis patients experience pigmentation problems. These include:
Hyperpigmentation (especially in areas exposed to sunlight)
Pale skin (possibly due to anemia)
Yellowish skin (caused by deposition of lipochrome and carotenoids in the skin when kidney filtration is ineffective)
Notably, the longer kidney disease persists, the higher the likelihood of developing pigmentation disorders.
Itchy skin
One of the most common skin conditions related to kidney disease is itchy skin. Medical News Today cited a 2019 review showing that up to 84% of patients with end-stage kidney failure experienced itching. Among dialysis patients, the rate is lower but still around 40%.
Kidney-related itching often worsens at night, during activity, or in hot environments. Patients may feel itching all over or in localized areas. Common itchy areas include the abdomen, head, back, or arms.

Kidney disease symptoms are not always obvious and can easily be overlooked because they resemble other health problems. However, early recognition makes treatment more effective. Besides skin-related signs, here are some other common symptoms of kidney disease:
Swelling in the feet, ankles, or legs.
Changes in urination habits, such as urinating more or less frequently, or needing to urinate often at night.
Foamy urine or blood in the urine.
Persistent fatigue: The kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin, which helps create red blood cells to carry oxygen. When kidney function declines, the body doesn’t make enough erythropoietin, leading to anemia and fatigue.
Back pain, especially in the kidney area.
Nausea and vomiting.
Difficulty concentrating.
High blood pressure.
If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it’s best to see a doctor right away for timely diagnosis and treatment.
