What Happens When You Sleep on Your Right Side?

When lying on the right side, stomach contents may sit closer to the lower esophageal sphincter.

For some people with GERD, this position may allow acid to reach the esophagus more easily.

Research has shown that right-side sleeping may be associated with:

  • Longer reflux episodes
  • Increased nighttime heartburn
  • Greater acid exposure in the esophagus

However, not everyone experiences the same effect.

Sleeping on Your Back

Sleeping on your back isn't necessarily harmful, but it can increase reflux if stomach acid easily reaches the esophagus.

For people with GERD, doctors often recommend:

  • Elevating the head of the bed by 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)
  • Using a wedge pillow rather than stacking regular pillows

Simply adding extra pillows under your head may bend your neck without effectively reducing reflux.

Sleeping on Your Stomach

Sleeping face-down is generally not recommended for acid reflux.

This position may:

  • Increase pressure on the stomach
  • Worsen reflux symptoms in some people
  • Cause neck and back discomfort

For most people with GERD, left-side sleeping remains the preferred option.
