Doctors at Vietnam’s National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology are warning people not to ignore unusual changes in their fingernails, as some symptoms may be linked to serious conditions including malignant melanoma — one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer.

Experts say nail-related cancers are often detected late because many people mistake the symptoms for bruises, fungal infections, or harmless nail damage. However, early diagnosis can greatly improve survival and treatment outcomes.

1. Dark Lines or Streaks on the Nail

One of the most important warning signs is a black or dark brown line running vertically along the nail. Doctors say the line may gradually become wider, darker, or uneven over time.

According to dermatologists, melanoma under the nail — also called subungual melanoma — can initially look like an ordinary bruise, causing many people to ignore it for months or even years.

2. Pigmentation Spreading Around the Nail

Doctors warn that if dark color spreads from the nail onto the surrounding skin or cuticle area, the situation may become more concerning.

Experts describe this as one of the more dangerous signs because it may indicate the abnormal cells are expanding beyond the nail itself.

3. Nail Deformation or Splitting

Changes in nail shape, roughness, splitting, lifting, or thickening should also be taken seriously, especially when they continue getting worse over time.

Specialists explain that cancer developing beneath the nail can damage the nail structure, causing visible deformities that do not heal normally.

4. Persistent Nail Changes That Don’t Improve

Unlike temporary bruises or injuries, suspicious nail symptoms often remain for long periods and continue changing gradually.

Doctors say many patients delay medical visits because the nail usually does not cause pain in the early stages. This can make the disease harder to detect before it spreads.

5. Symptoms Appearing More Often in Older Adults

Experts note that nail melanoma is more commonly seen in adults over age 50, although it can appear at any age. In Asia, nail melanoma accounts for a higher percentage of melanoma cases compared to Europe.

People with a history of nail trauma or repeated nail injuries may also have higher risk factors.
