To help reduce the risk of cancer, nutrition expert Sun Yu-ying warns that moldy nuts, processed meats, and alcoholic beverages should be consumed in moderation and with careful attention to frequency.
Maintaining good health involves more than regular medical checkups; daily dietary habits also play a crucial role. Sun Yu-ying, a nutrition expert from Taiwan, cautions that some seemingly ordinary foods may pose health risks when consumed excessively over long periods. In a social media post published on April 1, she identified three food groups that people should limit as much as possible to help prevent cancer.
Processed meats such as sausages, bacon, and cured meats often contain nitrites, which are added to extend shelf life. However, when these foods are cooked at high temperatures, nitrites may be converted into compounds that can be harmful to health. In addition, processed meats are typically high in fat, and frequent consumption can place a significant burden on the body.
Experts recommend prioritizing fresh foods in daily meals. Processed meats should be treated as occasional foods rather than regular main dishes.
Alcohol consumption is associated with a variety of health risks, particularly when intake is excessive or prolonged. Regular drinking can place considerable strain on the liver and digestive system.
Health experts advise limiting both the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption. Alcohol should be consumed only in small amounts and on occasions when it is truly necessary to help avoid the long-term accumulation of harmful substances in the body. Moderation and self-discipline are considered essential for reducing the health risks associated with alcohol.
Peanuts that are not stored properly can develop aflatoxins, naturally occurring toxins that can seriously harm human health. The risk is not limited to raw peanuts; related products such as peanut butter, mixed nuts, and certain grain products may also be affected.
Consumers should never eat foods that have an unusual odor, visible mold, or have passed their expiration date.
Dr. Sun recommends focusing on whole foods such as vegetables, legumes, and fresh meats while minimizing the consumption of processed foods. She also emphasizes the importance of checking expiration dates and storing foods properly to prevent spoilage. Regarding alcoholic beverages, she stresses moderation, allowing the body sufficient time to recover and maintain its natural balance.
