The courtroom was quiet when the screen suddenly connected.

A father appeared on one side.

His son appeared on the other.

They hadn't seen each other for months.

Michael Carter looked at the screen and smiled.

His son, Ethan Carter, smiled back.

“How have you been, son?”

Ethan looked down before answering.

“I've been okay, Dad.”

The room became unusually quiet.

Michael asked whether Ethan was eating well.

Ethan asked how his father was doing.

The judge allowed them a brief moment to speak.

Neither man seemed interested in arguing.

“Keep going. Don't give up.”

Ethan nodded.

“I won't.”

It felt like a father and son who had finally been given a few precious minutes together.

When the hearing continued, they had to say goodbye again.

But this time, Ethan left the screen with a small smile.
