A photograph.

A memory.

One man opened Number 18 and started crying.

“I knew Ethan,” he whispered.

Another woman said:

“So did I.”

Then someone else raised their hand.

“I did too.”

I looked around.

“What is happening?”

No one answered.

Finally, Detective Harris said:

“I think your husband had a larger circle than you knew.”

I shook my head.

“He wasn't famous.”

“No,” the detective said.

“But he may have been memorable.”

That was exactly it.

Ethan didn't change the world.

He changed individual moments.

And apparently, those moments had traveled farther than I ever realized.

Then We Opened Number 23

This was the box that changed everything.

Inside was a key.

A brass key with a small plastic tag.

The tag had one word:

STORAGE

I frowned.

I didn't recognize it.

Eli looked at me.

“Maybe Dad had a storage unit.”

“He never told me.”

Detective Harris examined the key.

“There may be a facility nearby.”

I turned the tag over.

There was an address.

My heart began pounding.

I knew that address.

It was the old storage facility where Ethan had kept boxes before we moved into this house.

After his death, I never went there.

I couldn't.

I had been unable to sort through his things.

I just kept paying the monthly fee because I couldn't face it.

The detective looked at me.

“Do you know what's there?”

I nodded.

“My husband's things.”

He handed me the key.

“Then tomorrow, we're going.”

That Night, Nobody Slept

The umbrellas remained on the lawn.

Neighbors kept calling.

Messages appeared on my phone.

People I didn't know wrote:

“Please open Number 31.”

“Your husband once helped my father.”

“I knew Ethan.”

“My mother remembers him.”

The story was spreading.

But I didn't care about social media.

I kept looking at the blue umbrella.

The one missing from our home.

The umbrella that had started all of this.
