A 35-year-old man thought his persistent sore throat was just a minor infection — but after months of ignoring the symptoms, doctors discovered it was linked to throat cancer. Following several rounds of chemotherapy, specialists began warning the public that certain everyday habits and foods stored in the refrigerator could increase long-term health risks.
According to doctors, many people overlook early warning signs of throat cancer because the symptoms often resemble common illnesses. Persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, swollen lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, and ear pain are some of the symptoms that should never be ignored. Experts say early diagnosis greatly improves treatment outcomes.
Health specialists particularly warn against keeping these 2 types of foods in your fridge for too long:
1. Processed meats
Items such as sausages, bacon, ham, and smoked meats often contain preservatives like nitrates and nitrites. Research has linked excessive consumption of processed meats to a higher risk of several cancers, including colorectal and certain throat-related cancers when combined with smoking or alcohol use. The World Health Organization has classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is strong evidence it can contribute to cancer risk.
2. Moldy or expired foods
Even small amounts of mold on bread, leftovers, fruits, or sauces may produce harmful toxins called mycotoxins. Some of these compounds have been associated with liver damage and increased cancer risk over time. Doctors advise throwing away foods that smell strange, show mold, or have passed their expiration date instead of trying to “cut off” the spoiled parts.
Specialists also remind people that throat cancer risk is strongly linked to smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, chronic acid reflux, and infection with the Human papillomavirus infection. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoiding heavily processed foods may help lower risk.
If a sore throat lasts more than two or three weeks, especially when accompanied by difficulty swallowing or neck swelling, doctors recommend seeking medical evaluation instead of self-medicating at home.
