HER BEST FRIEND STOLE HER BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY… BUT NO ONE EXPECTED WHO WOULD GET THE JOB IN THE END
HER BEST FRIEND STOLE HER BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY… BUT NO ONE EXPECTED WHO WOULD GET THE JOB IN THE END
“I already recommended you to them. Don't ruin this opportunity.”
Sophie stared at her best friend, Emma.
“What are you talking about?”
Emma smiled.
“That position isn't for you.”
Sophie froze.
“But you were the one who told me they were hiring.”
“That's right.”
“You even helped me prepare my application.”
“That's right.”
“So why are you telling me not to go to the interview?”
Emma looked at her.
“Because I think…”
“you're not the right fit.”
Sophie said nothing.
She had no idea…
Emma had secretly applied for the exact same position.
And the most painful part wasn't losing the opportunity.
It was discovering that the person who took it away…
was the person she trusted the most.
1. TWO FRIENDS, ONE DREAM

Sophie and Emma had been best friends since college.
Both dreamed of working for a major media company.
They used to say:
“If one of us gets hired first…”
“The other will be the first person to celebrate.”
Sophie truly believed that.
After graduation, they joined different companies.
Emma quickly climbed the corporate ladder.
Sophie moved more slowly.
But she never gave up.
One day…
Emma called Sophie.
“I just heard the company is hiring a Creative Director.”
Sophie immediately asked:
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Do you think I have a chance?”
Emma smiled.
“Of course.”
“You should apply.”
Sophie had no idea…
Emma was preparing her own application too.
2. THEY BECAME COMPETITORS

Sophie spent two weeks preparing.
She rebuilt her portfolio.
Updated her résumé.
Practiced every possible interview question.
Emma even helped her.
“You should change this sentence.”
“Remove this part.”
“Add this project.”
Sophie was grateful.
“Thank you.”
Emma smiled.
“That's what friends are for.”
Sophie trusted her completely.
3. THE STRANGE PHONE CALL
Two days before the interview…
Sophie received a call from the recruitment department.
“Ms. Sophie, we'd like to verify some information on your application.”
“Of course.”
“Did you personally lead the Aurora campaign in 2024?”
Sophie was surprised.
“Yes.”
“We've received different information.”
Sophie paused.
“From whom?”
“We can't disclose that.”
The call ended.
Sophie immediately called Emma.
“What's going on?”
Emma asked:
“What happened?”
“They said someone questioned whether the campaign in my portfolio was really my work.”
Emma went silent for a few seconds.
“Maybe they're just being thorough.”
Sophie didn't think much of it.
Until the next morning…
she received an email.
“Your application has been placed on hold pending verification.”
4. THE FRIEND WHO STOPPED ANSWERING
Sophie called Emma.
No answer.
She texted her.
Nothing.
She began to worry.
That afternoon…
Emma finally called back.
Sophie asked:
“Do you know what's happening?”
Emma replied:
“Maybe you should skip the interview.”
“Why?”
“There are issues with your application.”
“But I can explain.”
Emma went silent.
“Sophie…”
“Don't go.”
Sophie asked:
“Are you advising me as my friend?”
“Yes.”
“Or are you afraid I'll get the job?”
Emma hung up.
Sophie stood there in shock.
5. SHE WENT ANYWAY

Sophie still went to the interview.
She walked into the room.
Three interviewers sat across from her.
One asked:
“Do you know why your application was flagged?”
Sophie shook her head.
“No.”
The interviewer opened a file.
“Someone claims you took credit for a campaign you didn't personally create.”
Sophie looked at the documents.
It was an anonymous accusation.
She calmly replied:
“I can prove exactly what I contributed.”
She opened her laptop.
Emails.
Design files.
Project timelines.
Client messages.
Revision histories.
She showed them everything.
The room became silent.
Finally…
the interviewer said:
“Thank you.”
6. THE TRUTH STARTS TO EMERGE

Three days later…
Sophie received a phone call.
“We'd like to invite you to the final round.”
She was confused.
“But my application…”
“We verified the information.”
“Some false information was submitted to us.”
Sophie asked:
“Who submitted it?”
There was a pause.
“We can't disclose that.”
But Sophie was beginning to suspect someone.
7. THE TWIST
On the final interview day…
Sophie walked into the room.
The person sitting across from her wasn't HR.
It was the CEO.
He placed a folder on the table.
“Do you know Emma?”
Sophie froze.
“Yes.”
“Your best friend?”
“Yes.”
The CEO looked at her.
“She applied for this position too.”
Sophie said nothing.
“During the recruitment process…”
“we received several negative reports about you.”
Sophie stared at him.
“But we discovered the information came from an anonymous account.”
“And that account…”
“was connected to Emma's computer.”
Sophie was speechless.
8. THE BETRAYAL
After the interview…
Sophie called Emma.
“It was you, wasn't it?”
Emma was silent.
“You sent those accusations?”
“…”
“Emma!”
Finally, Emma started crying.
“Yes.”
Sophie said nothing.
Emma continued:
“I'm sorry.”
“I knew you were more qualified than me.”
“I was afraid that if we both applied…”
“they would choose you.”
Sophie asked:
“So what were you planning to do?”
Emma cried.
“I just wanted a chance.”
Sophie replied:
“You didn't want a chance.”
“You wanted me to lose mine.”
Emma said nothing.
9. THE MOST PAINFUL WORDS
Emma said:
“I thought…”
“If you failed once…”
“you would get back up.”
Sophie gave a bitter laugh.
“And our friendship?”
Emma couldn't answer.
Sophie continued:
“You could have competed with me.”
“You could have worked harder than me.”
“You could have beaten me.”
“But you chose to pull me down.”
Emma cried.
“I know.”
Sophie said:
“That's what I can't forgive.”
10. THE RESULT
One week later…
Sophie received an email.
“Congratulations.”
She had been chosen as the new Creative Director.
But what surprised her even more…
was that the company rejected Emma.
Not because she lacked talent.
But because the leadership realized:
Someone willing to sabotage a colleague to get a position could not be trusted to build a healthy team.
11. ONE LAST CONVERSATION
A few months later…
Emma came to see Sophie.
“Congratulations.”
Sophie smiled.
“Thank you.”
Emma asked:
“Do you hate me?”
Sophie was silent.
“No.”
Emma looked up.
“Really?”
“No.”
“But I don't trust you anymore.”
Emma lowered her head.
Sophie continued:
“There are mistakes people can fix.”
“But trust doesn't come back just because someone says sorry.”
Emma nodded.
“I understand.”
12. ONE YEAR LATER
Sophie became a strong manager.
She never tried to get revenge on Emma.
She never spoke badly about her.
One day…
the CEO asked Sophie:
“There’s a very talented candidate who wants to join your team.”
Sophie looked at the résumé.
It was Emma.
The CEO asked:
“Do you want me to reject her?”
Sophie remained silent for a long moment.
Then said:
“No.”
“Give her an interview.”
The CEO was surprised.
“After what she did?”
Sophie replied:
“We should judge people by what they do now.”
“Not only by one mistake from their past.”
“But this time…”
“she has to earn the opportunity herself.”
13. A SECOND CHANCE
Emma went through the interview.
No special treatment.
No help from Sophie.
She had to prove her abilities on her own.
And this time…
she succeeded.
Emma was hired into another department.
One day, she ran into Sophie in the hallway.
They looked at each other.
Emma smiled.
“Thank you.”
Sophie nodded.
“Don't thank me.”
“Thank yourself.”
Emma asked:
“Can we be friends again?”
Sophie gave a small smile.
“Maybe.”
“But this time…”
“let's start by being good colleagues.”
Emma nodded.
THE LESSON
There is a very thin line between competition and jealousy.
Competition makes you work harder.
Jealousy makes you want someone else to fail.
You can want someone else's position.
You can want to succeed more than your friends.
You can fight with everything you have for an opportunity.
But never destroy someone else just to prove that you deserve it.
Because if you have to pull someone down…
just so you can stand higher…
then that victory isn't worth celebrating.
And sometimes…
the most dangerous person isn't your rival.
It's the person smiling beside you, calling you their “best friend,” while secretly hoping you'll fail.
