How to Quickly Soothe Chili Burns on Hands and Mouth at Home

Chili burns are a common issue caused by eating spicy peppers or prolonged skin contact with them. This burning sensation can be quite uncomfortable, but fortunately, there are simple and effective ways to relieve it.

Why Do Chili Peppers Burn the Skin?

According to research from the University of Montana and Northern Arizona University, USA, chili peppers contain capsaicin, the compound responsible for their intense heat and burning effect. Capsaicin is so potent that it is even used in pepper spray formulas.

While chili burns are not dangerous, treating them promptly can prevent discomfort, skin irritation, or darkened skin. Since capsaicin is oil-based, it can be effectively removed using the right cleansing agents.

How to Soothe Chili Burns on Hands

1. Use Dish Soap or Hand Soap

Dish soap is designed to break down grease and oil, making it an excellent choice for removing capsaicin from the skin.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with dish soap or hand soap to dissolve the chili oil.
  • If the burning persists, repeat the process multiple times.
  • Use a soft toothbrush or sponge to clean under your nails where capsaicin may be trapped.

2. Apply Cooking Oil or Vaseline

If soap isn’t immediately available, try using vegetable oil or olive oil. The oil dissolves oil principle allows these substances to neutralize capsaicin effectively.

  • Rub a generous amount of oil onto the affected skin for about one minute.
  • Wash off with soap and water afterward.
  • Vaseline works similarly due to its high oil content and can provide soothing relief.

3. Soak Hands in Vinegar

Scientific studies suggest that diluted vinegar can break down capsaicin and ease chili burns.

  • Soak your hands in vinegar for a few minutes.
  • Alternatively, acidic foods like lemon juice or tomato juice can offer similar relief.

How to Soothe a Burning Mouth from Spicy Food

1. Drink Cold Milk

Full-fat milk is highly effective in neutralizing chili burn because:

  • It contains fat and oil that dissolve capsaicin.
  • The casein protein in milk counteracts the spice.
  • Hold a sip of cold milk in your mouth for a few minutes for the best relief.
  • You can also apply cold milk to chili-burned skin using a soft cloth.

2. Use Ice Cubes

Cold therapy helps reduce the burning sensation.

  • Apply an ice cube directly to the affected area.
  • If treating skin burns, wrap the ice in a towel and gently rub it over the burn.
  • Repeat several times until relief is felt.

3. Apply Aloe Vera Gel

Just like treating sunburn, aloe vera gel can soothe chili burns.

  • It improves blood circulation and cools down the burning sensation.
  • Apply a small amount to the affected skin and let it absorb.

By following these simple home remedies, you can quickly and effectively relieve chili burns on your hands and mouth.
