Sleeping Over 10 Hours a Day? Beware — It Could Signal These Hidden Health Problems

Experts recommend that we get 7–8 hours of sleep each night to allow the body to restore energy and refuel for the next day. However, some people don’t understand why they constantly feel sleepy and may even sleep more than 10 hours a day.

If you also find yourself sleeping longer than the recommended amount, let’s explore some possible causes!

1. Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness) is a condition that causes individuals to sleep more at night or during the day. In reality, people with hypersomnia often feel very drowsy during the day. Even while driving or working, they may doze off. This condition can leave them feeling tired, exhausted, and unable to stay alert enough to function properly.

2. Depression

Depression affects the nervous system and can lead to excessive sleepiness. Therefore, you should not overlook sleeping too much as a warning sign, especially if you have a history of depression.

3. Thyroid problems

There are two types of thyroid issues that can affect sleep—one can even cause insomnia, while the other leads to fatigue and drowsiness at all times.
People with hypothyroidism often sleep more than 10 hours a day and feel tired during the day. If you don’t have any other health problems but still sleep more than 10 hours daily, you should get your thyroid checked immediately.

4. Sleeping fewer than 6 hours a night

Not getting enough sleep each night can also make you sleep longer during the day. Ideally, adults should sleep 7–8 hours per night. If you consistently sleep fewer than 6 hours, your body will become fatigued, exhausted, and crave more sleep, which leads to frequent daytime naps.

5. Sleep apnea

This is a condition that usually occurs at night, disrupting the body and causing a need for more sleep. As a result, people with sleep apnea often sleep longer hours to allow their body to get adequate rest.

6. Heart problems

Oversleeping may also be an early warning sign of heart disease, especially if you’re not overworked but still feel constantly drowsy. Many people with heart disease are unaware of their condition, since excessive sleepiness is often mistaken for ordinary fatigue.
