The story of Xiao Zhang, 38, recently shared in Chinese media, serves as a wake-up call for many people. Xiao Zhang was rushed to the hospital due to impaired consciousness. At first, doctors suspected heatstroke. Mild heatstroke isn’t dangerous, but severe heatstroke—or heat shock—can be life-threatening.
However, tests revealed his blood sugar was alarmingly high at 40 mmol/L. He wasn’t suffering from heatstroke, but rather a hyperosmolar coma caused by diabetes.
“Diabetes at just 38? Didn’t he know he was ill? Why wait until the condition was so serious before going to the hospital?” the doctor asked Xiao Zhang’s family.
According to his relatives, Xiao Zhang was addicted to soda, almost completely replacing water with soft drinks. He had experienced dry mouth for a long time but never sought medical attention. Doctors concluded that he had been diabetic for quite some time.
The main cause of his diabetes was closely tied to his long-term habit of drinking soda. High sugar content in soft drinks easily leads to insulin resistance, resulting in hyperglycemia.
Doctors further warned: Chronic conditions like hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and high blood sugar are dangerous because they silently damage blood vessels. Over time, this can cause narrowing or even complete blockage, leading to severe consequences.
To protect your blood vessels and avoid ending up like Xiao Zhang, doctors strongly advise: Stop drinking these 5 types of beverages immediately.
1. Alcohol
Many believe alcohol helps dilate blood vessels and benefits cardiovascular health. This is a complete misconception!
Initially, alcohol may cause temporary vasodilation, but it soon leads to vasoconstriction, which lasts much longer. Long-term drinking increases the risk of hypertension. Alcohol also disrupts fat metabolism, raising blood lipids—especially low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the main culprit behind atherosclerosis.
2. Carbonated Soft Drinks
According to the Chinese Nutrition Society, added sugar intake should be under 50g per day. Yet a 500ml soda often contains over 60g of sugar.
In other words, drinking soda is essentially drinking “sugar water.” Excess sugar contributes to weight gain, insulin resistance, and over time, diabetes—one of the leading causes of microvascular damage.
3. Milk Tea
Some wonder: Isn’t milk tea good since it contains milk?
In reality, milk tea is not pure fresh milk. To enhance flavor, it usually contains large amounts of sugar—some types even exceeding 70g of sugar per serving, more than soda. Frequent consumption raises diabetes risk and harms vascular health.
4. Rich Meat Broth
Elderly people often love strong meat broths, believing they are packed with nutrients. But this is a serious misconception!
Meat broth has little nutritional value and mainly contains fat and purines. Regular intake increases blood lipids and purine levels, which damage blood vessels and raise the risk of gout.
5. High-Salt Beverages
Some people like adding extra salt to soups, or consume sports drinks and packaged juices with high sodium levels, unaware that this leads to excessive salt intake.
Salt is primarily sodium chloride, which increases blood volume and raises blood pressure. Chronic high blood pressure damages blood vessels and accelerates atherosclerosis.
